Puppy sitting

Our daughter and her husband collected their puppy last weekend. As it came too soon in their planning I told them I would puppy sit for four days. So on monday and tuesday I went to their house to take care of crocopup Pepper. Here is a picture of him! Sleeps still a lot, but awake he will check everything with his mouth and will hold on to it...more than Odin did. It's quite a character....

That’s so interesting about the vaccinations. Here in Cape Town, there is a very well regarded force-free positive-rewards trainer who has written articles about getting your puppy out about in the critical window for socialising. She advocates for interactions with healthy vaccinated dogs that you know are well adjusted (not unknown strange dogs). She says she is very often contacted to help with behavioural problems with dogs who were kept isolated as puppies. She does mention that Labradors have a bigger socialisation window compared to, say, a GSD. Here’s one of her articles: Facebook

This was the standard advice when I last had a puppy - which admittedly was ages ago so who knows what US vets are advising now. I’ve been surprised in my travels that medical (including for dogs) standard practice can vary widely, even within the relatively small area of the EU.

For example when I was going to get a puppy before Carbón (I know, what a silly idea to get a puppy and not Carbón 😉), and consulted my German vet, she said to walk him around town on the ground and meeting dogs from day one. She said the risk of disease was minuscule and puppies needed socialisation. This was very different from the US where it was no contact with the ground outside but socialisation with known and vaccinated dogs. I carried my Rottie puppies in a sling until I couldn’t lift them any more. 🤣

It's not that they waite to interact with other dogs until they are fully vaccinated. He has had one while still with the breeder. It's just not sufficient and they have to waite till next friday. After friday it's okay to meet other doggy friends.
I just went out with him to toilet and a man came to see Pepper. He had 2 dogs with him. I told him that I would pick Pepper up for he is not allowed to play yet. He told me that he never have vaccinated his dogs......Also there are a lot of rescue dogs out of foreign countries. Who are poorly vaccinated and are bringing divers diseases with them. For example at this moment there is a warning about canin distemper. So beter be on the safe side...

Absolutely this.
I don't think I would ever forgive myself if I took an unnecessary risk with a small puppy leading to loss of life. My parents could remember dogs dying of distemper and/or hardpad when they were young and told me that it's a nasty death and dogs suffered badly.
Anyway, the whole thing about socialisation and the best way to go about it is open to debate it seems to me.
