Putting the big girl pants on

I have a big house in my doorstep. When Cupar was a puppy I would walk the big walks around the estate. Then the 'professional' dog walkers took over. Cupar by then being reactive I had to stop the using them. Of all the things I miss with having a reactive dog, these walks are the biggest things I miss.

Part of the estate has gardens around the house and all dogs must be kept on a lead, so today (it's the Scottish school holidays) I decided as Cupar is getting better in his reactiveness, to drive to the big house and take Cupar around the gardens on my own.

It was absolutely wonderful, the gardens were only planted a few years back but they're gorgeous now and Cupar was brilliant, there were very few dogs but any we did meet, he behaved beautifully. I was armed with squeezey cheese, his reactions were concerned but not over the top, we had no snarling.

To anyone that can just go a walk with their dog and not consider what happens if you meet other dogs, being able to walk in public and not have what looks like the most vicious dog ever, this is a major moment for us.

This is going to be a regular walk now. It does really pay to sometimes put the big girl pants on.

That is wonderful, I am so glad you took the plunge taking Cupar on your favourite walk. I think our reactive dogs can sometimes surprise us which gives us the courage to take them new places and further help their issues. Onwards and upwards. Good boy Cupar xxx

That’s fantastic. I completely understand having a reactive dog myself. It’s such an amazing feeling when you take them for a walk and there aren’t any issues. Where I walk, most people know me and we know which dogs Harley will react badly to. There’s always a few ‘random/new’ people who annoy me as they let their dogs run up to us even if Harley is on lead, but they are far and few between luckily.

It is SO hard to get out and do these things, so huge, huge kudos to you! And it went brilliantly, that's awesome!! It sounds like a wonderful place, and will have given you a fabulous boost, I'm sure.

Today I went back to the 'big house', this time at 11:30 and the weather really warm. I did go with my granddaughter and her dog. ( Cupar hates max but as long as max is in front he's fine).
Place was really busy and this time lots of dogs. I'm less concerned now as there are signs all over, to remind people, dogs must be kept on leads.
On the way back to the car, I stopped to pick up Cupars poo, when two pugs appeared on the road both OFF lead. One growl is all this dog got until I stepped in between them, the other pug was getting growled at by Max ( who is great with all dogs), that silly woman could have got her dogs killed by a car but because both dogs had a go at them she put them on a lead.
Why did she think it was OK to walk two pugs Off lead in an area that requires all dogs to be on a lead?
