Quotes and poems

"Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die."
I love this one. We had it at my mum's funeral.

Just found this poem...from a well known dog trainer/behaviourist who has sadly just lost her inspiration...

For Skye...

"Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die."
(Mary Elizabeth Frye)
My Mother had died a few hours earlier, I had been with her when she died. My sister was flying in from America, desperate to get here before Mum died, but she didn't so wanted to see our Mother's body, she was in the morgue a the hospital. We did (wish I hadn't) it was a crisp, March morning, frost and daffodils and that poem came into my mind as I left my Mother and came out into the hospital garden.

Yes, 20 years since my Mother died, when the waves come they are very painful. However, the poems bring back our deep feelings for them and provide comfort as well. xx

This may just help those who are grieving , for dogs or for our close friends and relations . Its an analogy I used to use when counselling those who needed help , and then the boss lady at the Blue Cross asked if they could use my words which was quite lovely . It applies so many , myself included , and may just comfort and help to explain why we feel as we do at times .
Grief is like a wound . At first the wound hurts , the pain being unbearable as the wound is fresh and raw . Very slowly , the wound begins to feel less painful as it knits together and so we begin to feel that we are coping , are managing our grief . Then, one day , we catch our wound , it opens right up and once more we feel the pain . This happens often , but each time it happens , the pain is just a tiny bit more bearable until one day , the wound is closed leaving just a scar . The scar is our memory, our constant reminder of what we went through before reaching this stage and it will stay with us always xxxxx

Our lovely vet sent this when our first lab died. It's taken 65 attempts to type it through tears. OH still hasn't read it, he can't, and it's been nearly 8 years

The author is Christian Mitchell

Through life's journey we took a ride,
The times you spent by my side,
You always were there as my best friend.
But we knew one day, there would be an end.
Heavens doors are open, just walk through the gates,
In this animal kingdom sunshine awaits,
To a place you can run free, never grow old,
A world full of freedom, rivers of gold,
Towards the rainbow, you can play and run,
Or in the green fields, you relax in the sun,
Under the trees, just rest in the shade,
As this is the place, where dreams are made,
No pain or suffering exists in this place,
Only fields of endless happiness, butterflies you chase,
Beyond the hills, you lead your friends,
As my broken heart tries to mend,
When I light a candle and whisper your name,
This shall become forever an endless flame.
When you look down from pet heaven, see tears on my cheek,
Make me strong, day by day, week by week,
When I look among the stars for you,
I can see you shining in heaven, it's true,
Just wait for me, I'll see you one day,
But now my friend, just relax and play.
