Rabies injection

I took Homer in for his rabies renewal injection on Thursday evening and he's been a bit under the weather - to be expected but he's not been himself. On Friday morning on our usual walk there was a lot of loud works going on the corner of the common for the Thames Tunnel. Homer's been quite good about going past the noise but it was louder and more intense than usual and he didn't like it much, then on Saturday morning he cut his paw when swimming in the river but played with his ball in the park on Saturday evening. he was giving his ball to a man to throw for him and ran a bit too much but was having fun at the time. Today he's been a bit subdued, morning walk was gentle but an average length but this PM he's not really wanted to do much and hasn't had an PM poop although both hubby and I have taken him out he hasn't wanted to go far and he's a bit nor nervy than recently.

I hate to see him like this, earlier in the week he'd was amazing at going past the works and we had some brilliant walks.

I’m sorry he’s not feeling well. Apparently the rabies vaccination can make them feel ill. Do you have to have him vaccinated for local legal requirements? Could he not have a titre test to prove immunity?

Carbon's rabies jab tired him out for a day or so too. Hopefully Homer will be back in form soon.

I can't answer for @JES72 reasons, but for Carbon he has to have a rabies jab regularly (1-2 years depending on where he is vaccinated) to keep his passport current so that we can travel. He also has a rabies titre test but it's invalidated if the vaccines aren't kept up to date in his passport.

Homer needs the rabies jab to keep his passport up to date so that we can take him to France. We plan to take him to France to escape the worst of Bon fire season.

I got it for Carbon as a Brexit precaution. Prior to the current rules of entry to the UK, a titre test plus a vaccination record to show continuous coverage were required to avoid quarantine. Several months ago (running up to the original Brexit date), getting a titre done was once again recommended to mitigate the risks of No Deal or any other Brexit outcome where the current Pet Passport Scheme was affected.

As I learned with traveling with Brogan, having a titre is also good insurance against any border officials who may not understand the Pet Passport or outside the EU (re-entry to/from the US for example).

It makes sense that the titre certificate is only valid as long as you can show proof of continuous vaccination. Otherwise you'd have to get a new titre every time you crossed a border, which isn't practical, nor is it accepted in the EU without the passport.

Hi @JES72 I hope Homer is feeling a bit better today. Yes, Poppy had a similar reaction to the rabies vaccination recently - she was very lethargic for several days. I spoke to the vet about it, she said yes some dogs do react that way. Just give him a few days, don't try to make him do too much, I'm sure he'll be back to normal very shortly.

He's back to his normal self now. His paw is still a bit sensitive but he's not limping. Now that Trump has gone there are less helicopters buzzing around. At least this time I can blame the helicopters on Trump.
