Rally with Rajah

This weekend I'm in Somerset with Rajah, travelling home tomorrow, at the Ilminster show. Yesterday we failed to qualify at L3 but today we scored 201 and came 4th. (In my mind I'm calling it joint-2nd :giggl:as 3 of us scored the same mark so places were decided by time and we were the slowest of the three.)

I'm delighted with today but frustrated with myself for yesterday - it wasn't a disaster, only a few marks short of a qualifying score - but Rajah was lagging and tentative and I realised overnight what the problem was. I had my hand in the wrong place! When heeling he expects my left hand to be on my stomach and for some unknown reason I put it on my hip. He is so sensitive to any change in a cue either spoken or gesture, it was enough to confuse the poor boy. I also gave the wrong spoken cue for 'remain standing when coming to a halt at heel' - I stupidly said 'stay' instead of 'wait' and he sat down, so that was 5 marks lost for exercise incorrect.
I've unintentionally trained Rajah and Tess with different cues so I think I need to write myself a list for each dog and make sure I use the right ones!

Anyway that gives Rajah 2 excellents so far at L3 so we'll need one more which will have to wait till next spring now.
We've had a couple of good walks in the local country park too.
When I get home I'll put on some photos but the connection here is too erratic to do that.

An interesting read Joy, sorry you didn't achieve your goal for the weekend but onwards and upwards! It's amazing how they pick up on the tiniest of actions as well as verbal clues, I'm sure you will nail it next time out.

Our dog training school have sent a questionnaire to those of us who did the rally workshop, I hope they will put on more, Cass and I practice our Dressage for Dogs when she goes out for an afternoon wee !

Thought I'd add our latest show to this thread. We're just back from Copt Oak (Leicestershire) for a weekend of Rallying. On Saturday it was just L3 and we came 5th with a round I was fairly pleased with, scoring 185.

On Sunday we sadly didn't qualify in L3 - Rajah just seemed too tired - so as our Saturday score was 5 marks short of 'excellent' we still don't have our L3 title.
However on Sunday in L4 we just managed a qualifying score of 178. This was mostly due to 2 good exercises - the 'down on recall' (which Rajah always does well) and to my delight the bonus which was 'stand from sit at a distance'. We've been working at this over the winter and he really seems to have cracked it.
Reflecting on our rounds generally I feel Rajah is very good at what are called 'stationary exercises' - i.e. position changes. He can be relied on to sit, down or stand on cue. But our heelwork and turns definitely need sprucing up, so time to come up with a new training plan...again...

We also had some lovely walks at Beacon Hill Country Park. Thought you might like to see the views:

'stand from sit at a distance'.
Wow ! I am seriously impressed with this, well done
I have decided teaching Cass to stand even right next to me is beyond us xx
There is always something to take away from a competition isn't there? Even if you didn't quite achieve what you set out to do, it all sounds good to mexx And a training objective to boot!
It looks like a lovely part of the country, thanks for sharing .

I love your updates Joy, and hearing how you and Rajah get on. It does seem like witchcraft to me - like @Selina27 I’m so impressed with his solid stand from a distance, and I enjoy hearing your analytical unpicking of what went well and what you’re working on - it’sa fascinating insight into a trainer mindset. Thank you for sharing!
