Rest in peace Dexter

So sad, I wasn't on the other forum for long, but I'm sure I remember a Dexter. Four is tragically young, only a year older than my GGJ. Love and thoughts to her. Thanks for letting us all know, Kate.xxx

Hi everyone, I apologise for taking so long to come and thank you for your kind words for our gorgeous boy Dexter. We are still very much in shock of what happened. Dexter would have been 5 on 6th June, way way to young. He ran around our local field on the morning of 20th May without a care in the world and enjoyed an ACE Free work session at lunchtime before sleeping the afternoon away. When he woke up later in the afternoon he gave a little cry. Over the course of an hour we thought he may have a tooth abscess starting due to not wanting to open his mouth when trying to yawn or a stiff neck as he stopped himself from shaking his head. I contacted our vets and after speaking with the vet himself an appointment was made for the next morning. Dexter wouldn't eat kibble but enjoyed bone broth, some chicken and some wet food. He wasn't himself but never in a million years did we think we'd loose him the next day. He wouldn't eat or drink in the morning and we could tell he was deteriorating and in pain, when the vet examined him suspected pancreatitis. That test was negative but further blood tests showed anaemia. X-rays then revealed advanced, aggressive cancer in his spleen, liver and into his lungs. We had to make the very tough decision to have our lovely boy PTS, he was struggling by then. Due to lockdown we'd had to hand him over from outside but the vet did kindly let us be with Dexter, which we are thankful for. Thank you all for your kindness and support it means a lot to us.

Thanks for popping on, Donna, it's good to have you here; I just wish it weren't with such devastating news.
If you want to share pictures, stories, or any thoughts of your Dexter, then know that we're all here for you whenever you need. I know it can be tough to grieve "for too long" (by other people's perception) in the real world, but we know there's no time limit on it. So if the need strikes any time, be that today, next month, or a year from now, we'll be here to listen, laugh, or cry with you.

I'm so sorry for your tragic loss of Dexter, Donna. As Fiona says, any time you’d like to come and talk more about him, or share photos, or just be here and sit quietly with friends, we’re always here. Thinking of you in your grief xxx

Terribly sad. How kind and thoughtful of your vet to help you and Dexter through this very difficult time. My heart goes out to you

What a shock for you Donna and in one so young and so sudden, I am sorry. I am glad you were able to be with him, it makes such a difference to the dog. I used to be a vet nurse and if an owner could bear it, it was always better if the could stay. x
