Runny nose

Just over a week ago Red sneezed violently 3 times on two consecutive days. Before this I had noticed very occasionally her nose would run. I mentioned this to our vet last week when Red had her annual vaccinations and health check. She said Red could possibly have something stuck in her nose but we both discounted it as there has been no sign of pawing her nose. The vet did say if any investigations were necessary then it would have to be a referral to a specialist. On Saturday as I was sitting putting my boots on, she stood in front of me and her nose dripped - just the once. The same has happened today but I have found a few more nose drips on the wooden floor. She appears well and up for her two walks a day. The rest of the time she is very quiet and content. She only really makes herself known when it‘s getting near food time and she does this quietly by sitting and staring - she loves her food.

Of course I have googled drippy/runny nose in dogs and don’t like what I read - as well as blockages - tumour, dental problems, allergies

I am doing this thread just to see if anyone else has had this experience? Obviously if it gets worse/she shows signs of distress/illness, I will go back to the vet

I would get her seen if you can. I have experienced it with a friend who has a lab. It could be nothing but I would check

That is so kind @Cath. We are monitoring until Friday and will then contact the vet. I asked F if he would observe her more and we agreed we would give it a few more days. I am however very concerned. She is ok in herself but I know this isn’t right. I do not know who the vet will refer us too or where
Just wondering, if you’re concerned is it worth contacting the vet now? What’s the benefit of waiting? I’m just thinking that on Friday, you might get delayed by the weekend so it could be another week before anything happens. Which might be okay, but you might prefer not to wait. I know there’s no perfect answer, but it sounds like you might actually want to get going.

We have an appointment with our vet on Friday. I particularly want her to see the same vet who I trust. That is the earliest she is available.

I understand you are hoping it will all just go away
Yes I suppose there is an element of that but we would never neglect any concerns

via your insurance?
Red is no longer insured

How is dear Red this morning
I hope the appointment goes well today.
Thank you for asking @Cath and @Granca. We took Red and saw our vet. She was VERY thorough in checking Red all over. She shone a light up her nostril, felt her nose/face very gently, looked in her mouth. She is not unduly concerned and gave us 3 options:

- 7 days of anti inflammatories
- monitor
- further investigation which would be a referral. She outlined the pitfalls of this

We have gone for the anti inflammatories. I have been monitoring her nose and so has F since I asked him to. The nostril is still dripping but nothing like it was on Wednesday. As the liquid is clear, the vet says option 3 at this point would be intrusive and could cause damage e.g. nose bleeds/damage - so not something to undergo lightly.
