As you known, Carbon is also in the 'wants to play with everyone' camp. He also doesn't have great recall - still a work in progress. But if another dog doesn't want to play or their human is giving off 'stay away' signals, the leash goes on (usually after I trudge after him) and we head in the other direction with an apology to the human. Not only is it the right thing to do, it is a good training opportunity as Carbon and I both learn how to manage his bouncy hooligan tendencies.
I agree with @snowbunny - try to just let it roll off. You managed it perfectly and gave Reuben the play/training he needed despite the circumstances. A wasted trip to the field but happy Reubs at the end.

You`re talking my language here @Emily_Babbelhund ! You know how playful ( pain in the bum ! ) young Reuben is , he loves everyone but I wouldnt allow him to continually jump all over a dog who clearly didnt want to join in , the lead would go on and stay on until he had got well away . I guess all ended well , despite getting soaking wet but hey, thats dog ownership for you ! xx
