Skunked! poor boy is rubbing his face all over the house

The whole time i've had Shamas, i've avoided letting him out back at night, for fear of skunks. i forgot tonight, because of a migraine...and he's skunked. In the chest area.

I bathed him right away, and hubby just got back with Peroxide and Baking soda to bath him again. any suggesttions on removing the stench from the house??

Whew! That smells...well, not better, but less horrid lol! and at least he's stopped rubbing his face all over the house.

Mind you, that was the funniest, most polite bath refusal I ever watched.

"Shamas, come get in the bath" goes to crate,

"No Shamas, the bath. Come here" goes and lays in kitchen

"Shamas-Come here. It's time to clean you up" slinks over, and lays in FRONT of the tub but doesn't get in

LOL!

*Edit* thanks, @Lab_adore the migraine is on the mend-I'm in a condition to handle the situation, which is imrovement over yesterday, where i spent half the day in hospital, hoping for meds to stop it. I haven't walked Shamas for 2 days, due to not trusting my reflexes if he were to react to another dog, or chase a cat

Oh no!
Never smelled skunk but thinking fox+Migraine = tears and dog outside til Someone comes to help
Glad you are feeling a bit better x
Sounds about right. I've never smelled Fox, but have you ever smelled cheap pot, from a large group of teenagers? It's like that...only ten times stronger. I've always averred that teens smoking pot smelled like skunk...but Shamas last night was eye-watering strong!

I saw him twitching his face at the door, but I didn't clue in....the he walked in the house and OH MY! It was everywhere! Next thing I knew he was all over the house, rubbing his face on the floors to get it out of his sinuses and drooling like mad! His good harness is a write-off, ~~I think it took the brunt of it. Theres no way I'm putting that in my washing machine :puke:! Other than that, we only lost one old towel.

Of course, the kids are athsmatic, so hubby had to get them out of the house while I dealt with the stench and aired things out. Two baths later, he smells much less.

BTW, this recipe works wonders:
1qt peroxide(2bottles), 1/4c baking soda, 1tbsp dish soap
Apply to dry dog, leave in coat for 5 minutes, wash out

@Boogie I'll see if we have Cowboy Magic here. After last night, I'll be needing more shampoo lol!

We got skunked in June and OH and his friend let Quinn in the house right after! I washed all her bedding, soaked her collar in vinegar for 2 days and put coffee beans around the house in bowls with open windows. House smelled fine after 2 days.

After two doses of the peroxide, the next day I took her to a pet store with a self serve wash station and washed her with the anti-smell shampoo x3.

When I lived in the States, the neighbours used to say rub canned tomatoes on your dog to remove the scent of skunk... We didnt have a dog at the time, so luckily I never had to try it out!! Hope you get rid of the smell and that Shamas has learned his lesson...

I wouldn't bet on Shamas learning his lessons lol

Apparently the smell lingers...AB came home at lunch saying that her teachers

" have no problem if she wants to go home and shower"

Which I read as "would prefer not to have her in class right now"

LOL

Oh gosh I can’t imagine having that smell in the house. :puke:

I do live in fear of Simba running in to one...ugh. Glad you were able to clear the air relatively quickly!

The Mythbusters team did a skunk episode, and I'm sure the tomatoes came out on top (or tomato juice?)

Nope, just googled, peroxide won on the day:

Skunk/Smell

I can only imagine how bad it smells. I was thinking about you guys with your foxes and your skunks after Xena's little "mystery roll" the other week - you have all my sympathies!

Peroxide definitely helps. I can barely smell it on Shamas when he's dry now, and his coat feels lovely.

My hands on the other side.....yuck! And you'd be surprised how often your hands are near your nose in a day lol.

Might try visiting a hospital building to use the antimicrobial stuff they post in the hallways. Lol.
