Snowie was attacked, but happily visited by HAT

Poor lad, I hope he is soon better and back to normal. You did the right thing being a advocate for Snowie

Jeez! That sounds horrific! Absolutely beleive you did the right thing in staying with Snowie whilst he was having treatment. Poor lad, and what a shock for you.

Physically, I think Snowie is fine. He’s showing no signs of pain, although he is on anti-inflammatories so that might be masking pain. He didn’t mind at all when I cleaned them with antiseptic. And he doesn’t try to lick them. They’re healing really well.

But emotionally, he’s very needy. Yesterday he was very vocal and calling me to the bedroom to come to sleep when I was working late! Today I can’t get up without him following me. On our walk yesterday, he saw a big dog he’s never met—we both had our dogs on leash, about 50m apart—and he started huffing and standing stiff, and walked away in the opposite direction very readily when I said let’s go. He was fine with the usual dogs we meet, and even a couple of new ones, although one was a puppy and the other one was very small. I hope he doesn’t start to get frightened of unknown dogs because he’s always been so confident and so easy to take anywhere.

Have you called the dog warden? I would be reporting an attack of that severity, especially if it’s not the first time!
I wish we had a dog warden!! No such thing in South Africa. There are barely enough police. And I doubt the police would care unless a person was bitten. Dogs are considered property, so I could report a case of damage to property. Unfortunately, I didn’t realise at the time he’d been bitten, so I didn’t pay enough attention to the dogs or the person. But I will start asking questions to others who know the path well and who are familiar with all the dogs and walkers.

If you can find out who owns the dogs then perhaps the police is the right way to go. That owner needs a shock. Perhaps it might make him train his dogs properly.
I'm so glad that he is feeling better today.

If you do find out @M.F. you could point out it could of been a child that was attacked by them.

Hope Snowie comes round. He has had a terrible shock, but hopefully with time he will be ok.

One of the regular walkers on our path said he will do some “detective work”! He sent me a WhatsApp to say that he’d heard from the guy who had seen us in the vet. I just love what a small world I live in! :)

He said the only group of five dogs he knows of includes a white Lab that “gets aggressive with his mounting”. That might explain why I thought I saw the guy pulling Snowie by the tail.

Yesterday on our other off-leash walk we came across a woman and her four dogs. One of them has gone for Snowie before, a slight medium black dog. Can’t really inflict damage, but it’s a nasty piece of work. Snowie stood dead still when he saw them. When it went for Snowie yesterday, I grabbed It by the collar and shouted at it, which then got its mate, a bull terrier to go for Snowie. I was furious, still strung up and anxious. I yelled for all the mountain to hear! The bull terrier backed off immediately. I can be a lion when my boy needs protecting. But most of all, I was so angry with owner. She arrives and whacks the black dog with the leash and keeps walking. I shouted at her, said she’d better keep that dog on a leash when I see her next or put a muzzle on it. Completely ignored me. I was shaking. I’m the traumatized one! Later, I passed the same woman on the street, both of us walking our dogs on lead home. By now I could talk calmly. I asked her why, if she knows her dog goes for other dogs, why she doesn’t keep it on a lead. She agreed that when she sees us next, she’ll put the dog on a lead. In her own words “he’s aggressive”. WTF then???!!!!

What is wrong with people? Honestly @M.F. I would have reacted in exactly the same manner and so would my OH. That woman knows the dog is aggressive but still lets it off the leash? I just can't fathom it. I'm sorry this is happening, it must be so very stressful

We don't have dog wardens in Australia either, but that just goes with the un-dog-friendly country we are

If I was you I would start carrying a walking stick. Maybe then people would keep their aggressive dogs on a lead.
Poor Snowie should not have to put up with their bad behaviour.

Glad he’s going ok. That was a really bad attack. Some serious zen time is needed for both of you after such a horrible assault. I feel angry about it too.

We do in Canberra (but Canberra is the exception in many things...).

Yeesh that is awful, @M.F. !!
Poor Snowie, and poor you! It must make you think twice about stepping out the door. It’s so maddening that these people don’t seem to have an ounce of care as to the damage their dogs are doing

Urgh, people make me so angry. I'm glad you told that woman off. People need to hear it.

I hope Snowie recovers from his trauma. It is so horrible when gentle dogs are victims of this sort of thing. And even worse when the owners of the other dogs do nothing.

And yes @Lab_adore, Sydney at least is quite dog hostile. And my council area is one of the best!

Interesting @Oberon - what do they do? How visual are they?

I must say that when my cat was attacked and killed by two big aggressive dogs we rang both the police and the council and both were wonderful. That is the first and only time I have said something positive about the council! As ongoing renovators, the council is NOT our friend

Thanks, it was very traumatic. Oscar was 17 and losing it mentally and started wandering and too old to get away :'(. They got him on the footpath just outside our house.

My poor husband had to rescue his body while I stood in the middle of our street screaming - not my finest hour. The dogs were eventually put down (not the first attack) and the owner fined $11,000

We lost our first lab Benson and my darling Mum in the same year. It was a totally sh!t year :(
