Snowie’s eye

I thought it was going really well until you mentioned the muscle pain.
The vet sounds very competent but poor Snowie, being in so much pain, I hope it eases for him soon x

Thank you everyone! I so appreciate your comments. His eye looks much improved. I’m guessing the pain meds have kicked in so he’s not holding it so tightly closed. At least I can see an eye!!!!!!! He’s compliant with applying the eye gel but won’t open his eye wide enough, so I’m applying it frequently in the hopes that a little gets in frequently.

But he’s still walking with head hung low and is hesitant to climb steps (our house has two or three steps all over!!). Wish we had a completely flat house!

He’s also whining. But that might be because at this time of day our cleaner (on the days she works here) takes him to the park. No chance of that happening now—too dusty. And he needs to rest after this ordeal. Of course any sound from him makes my heart break. When I go to pet him, he’s so affectionate, I wish I could just make it all better for him.

Only just reading this and I'm so sorry for what poor Snowie is going through, and for how anxious you are. He sounds a little better in your last post so I hope that continues. x

Only just catching up. Hope Snowie is feeling better and you are feeling more relaxed.
If you can't find Doggles, get some snow googles for the interim?

Oh @M.F. , how utterly upsetting for you and Snowie. It sounds like he might be turning a corner though. And it sounds like you’re doing all you can. Keep up the stroking/massaging, it’ll help you both feel better. And maybe read to him? I know it might sound mad, but when Kipper’s been unwell I read stories to him and it seems to settle him (both of us actually!). Worth a go :)

I love that idea!! Thank you. I do chat to him (to calm myself mostly!) and explain everything to him. But I think reading is a much better idea because sometimes I’m at a loss for what to say when I’m so stressed and become rather repetitive!
I also found I read things I hadn’t read before, we read Black Beauty and The Longest Journey. It was fascinating how he became very calm and you could tell he was listening.

Snowie is a different dog this morning. Playful like a puppy. Thank goodness for pain meds. He was so excited when our gardener arrived that he carefully selected a toy—his tennis ball—and bounced it around, played soccer with us (we roll the ball to him with a foot tap, he stops it with his paw, picks it up in his mouth, and tosses it back), and generally ran around like a hooligan. Such relief! His eye looks better—at least there’s an eye there! Not shiny like the good eye, but appears on the mend. I put lubricant gel in every two hours. He accepts it but still not quite opening his eye wide enough to get all of it in, so I’m not sure exactly how much goes in. I tested it on myself, and even applying it to the corner of a closed eye and then blinking, like he does, gets some lubricant into the eye.

I’m totally ecstatic to let you know that Snowie’s eye is healed. He had a follow-up appointment yesterday and the vet proclaimed it was healed. She used a dye and a blue light and a special contraption she wore on her head (like a welding helmet) to examine him. She said the procedure works in 80% of cases and that Snowie was one of them. What a relief!

She said he probably has a weakness (can’t remember the word she used) to get this problem in that eye, so might need it again if he injures the cornea again.

She praised Snowie for how easy he was to work with. My husband and I were very proud!!

His follow-up appointment was actually for Friday. But with the lockdown starting at midnight Thursday, we were asked to come in yesterday. The vet was working till 9pm to fit in everyone. She said she would only be doing emergencies during the lockdown.

As for the cost, we had three appointments with our regular vet for Snowie’s eye. Each appointment cost the same as the specialist’s appointment (which included the theatre procedure)... but without the result.
