Soooo much blood from a dew claw

I think it might still be quite common. But I’m pleased Snowie has his—he uses them every day to hold his bone. It’s so interesting watching him hold his bone, the “opposable thumbs”—the dew claw and the little “thumb”—really work hard! He eats raw meat and bones and picks out the large pieces from his bowl and settles on the grass and holds them in his paws while eating. So he’s probably feeling a bit disabled at the moment!
That's interesting, I had no idea they could use them like that!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes and commiserations! Snowie is completely fine. When the dressing and micropore are on, he ignores it. When it’s off, he grooms the entire area, every inch of paw, lick lick lick—that annoying gloop gloop sound! The dressing gets changed twice a day, after he swims. Wound looks totally fine, and I’d leave it uncovered if he’d only not lick it, but the sound of licking is so irritating, and I also think he relaxes more when he’s not licking it.

How is Snowie doing?
Thanks for asking! So kind of you! He is back to normal. No bandage—we stopped putting it on after a couple of days. He hardly notices it. Licks it every now and then, but he licks the other one, too, every now and then. I’ve had a good look. There’s still rough, jagged nail around the top, with the pink inside completely exposed. I can’t smooth the remaining nail, I might hurt him. It’s not so bad, doesn’t catch anything.

I do feel guilty. His dew claws had grown quite long, which I think contributed to the accident. I normally clip his nails. But lately I’ve felt afraid because my eyesight is terrible, and unless I have bright light, I’m afraid I’ll cut them too short. And I’ve been working so hard of late, my eyes are worse than normal. But after this incident, I got my husband to shine the phone torch onto them and I gave them all a quick trim.

Must admit this thread has concentrated my mind a bit on Cassie's nails, she nibbles them herself and especially her dew claws, so it's a reminder to keep an eye on them. Like you though I'm afraid my eyesight isn't as good as it was, but my daughter will help me !

When she nibbles them, is she making them shorter? Maybe you can leave the trimming up to her! :)

Hah, I’m doing either desensitisation or trimming every single day at the moment! I should write a post on it :)
Luckily Snowie couldn’t care less. From the start, I handled his paws all the time. But he’s very interested, must always sniff the clippers and have his nose right in the action. Which makes it difficult getting my nose right in there so that I can actually see what’s going on—not enough room for both of us! I need to be very close to see properly.
