I'm actually not in a good place dog wise at the moment. I'm yo-yoing between let's get another one and we're never going to have another dog. One trouble is I'm worrying that my OH is just encouraging me to look for a dog but she's not keen herself - just being selfless again in her usual way. Also reading the helpful replies above I think a Springer might be just too much - although I've always liked them a lot. Then again there are dogs that my OH likes but that I haven't any real desire for. Like a Border Terrier, or a retired Grey Hound.Anyway @David, I think the most important questions are:
1. When are they ready?
2. Which colour are you getting?
3. Boy or girl?
4. Have you chosen a name yet?
So the bottom line is I'm procrastinating so although the Springer pups are there I haven't called yet. Also the earliest we could get there is next Friday and I doubt they will still be available by then as they are working strain and will be gone in a flash.
I'm actually finding this really difficult at the moment. Sorry to have set a hare running.

It’s really tough. There is no right or wrong timeframe. Sounds like taking it slow might be a plan for now though. Remove the pressure of having to make a decision...and maybe let this one through to the keeper.

My neighbors went through the same. They lost their black lab in December last year. They didn’t want to have one again, also their age became an issue. After a few month he was longing for another one, she said it was his choice...They started looking again, but Covid stood in their way. All were reserved or gone. They finally found a pup and a day before they wanted to visit her the pup died....
The day after this my sister came to me to ask if they were still looking. I phoned them and a day later they had a gorgeous lab of 9 month old. They are very pleased with him and enjoys every day of his company.

It doesn't hurt to look, maybe your heartstrings will suddenly tug at a pup or a rescue and you will know it is time.
Some people never get another dog but that would be such a waste, there could be a dog ready to give you lots of love out there, but don't feel pressured or you may regret it.

I can totally vouch for a Border Terrier. I was never that fussed then enter Basil. Now I would have one in a heartbeat. What an absolute sweetheart he is. He’s Stanley’s best ever friend
I think if it were me, I'd be inclined to maybe look for a rescue. There are so many lovely dogs just waiting for a kind loving home...

It's so hard when your beloved dog is gone. After my last, Rolo, died I started looking at ads for puppies fairly soon but actually didn't feel ready to take the plunge until nearly a year later - and then it was very sudden, just saw the ad for Molly and went and got her the same day. So there's no harm in looking at ads, but equally ok to just look for a while.
Thanks - yes I know Borders - I used to have one when I was younger. Lovely dogs if a bit feisty at times ie boxing well above their weight.I can totally vouch for a Border Terrier. I'm with @kateincornwall and @Selina27 on this one. 'If in doubt do nowt' (possibly something to do with me having lived half my life in Yorkshire) and you don't have to decide now. I know how hard it is to be without a dog that has been such an important part of your life and sometimes there is a feeling of just wanting to fill that sad and gaping hole, but to me it feels like very early days still. I also think that you will know when/if it's the right time to start looking again. I always have and it's always worked out well, with the new dog feeling not like a replacement for a loved companion, but a new family member in her own right. Very best wishes to you at this difficult time.
