Techniques to try when over threshold on the lead

Just a little update - we’ve just done a week of focusing on this and he’s been a little star.

This week I’ve stayed in the village and done a mix of lead walks around and them some lead walks to the off-lead fields - and they’ve all been just me and him.

Overall, his over-threshold craziness has massively reduced over here. (as long as no other dogs around!).

I had to adapt the figure of 8 as narrow country lanes, no pavements and cars coming every time I started - made it virtually impossible! So instead I just stood still and he’d come back and then I’d stand for a bit and then I’d walk REALLY REALLY slowly and calmly - and it seems to have done the trick :fingers: And I’ve also really increased the reward rate.

So pleased with him.

One thing I have noticed is that I think he hates the lead getting putting on. He’s not particularly keen on the harness but he’s not too bad. But as soon as the lead comes near to be attached his tail goes between his legs and I think he goes into a bit of panic. / flight mode trying to get away.. So the over-threshold at the beginning of the walk might actually be a bit more of a fear / nervous thing contributing to it. Maybe???

As soon as we’re out of the gate and onto the road - he seems more normal again. Very odd. So I’m trying to do lots of yummy treats with the lead going on. And putting it on and off lots. So hopefully that will help as well.

But overall - a great first week from Booms :) :inlove:
