Teethies

I feel silly asking this 🤦🏼‍♀️ But I wasn’t educated with Axel and let him chew bully sticks and other hard chews from 3 months old on… That being said, Hugo is 5 months old and I’m pretty certain he has lost all of his puppy teeth now, adult ones are almost all in and definitely broken through. Yay! To be honest he was a dream while teething, wouldn’t have even known besides a few good chews on his rope toy, or finding blood on his stuffies and teeth on the floor 😅 Where as Axel was awful when teething, and bully sticks, buffalo horns and frozen kongs were the only reason he survived those few months 😂

Is it now safe to give Hugo harder chews? I had taken away his root chew and another hard chew as I didn’t want the puppy teeth to come out before they should. But now is there a worry of him chewing before all of his adult teeth are fully in?

Don’t worry, not planning on giving him anything that could upset his sensitive tummy he has right now. But thought I could at least give him the root chew back, he loved it the short period he had it 😊

I would say yes to root chews Kelsey.
I think if a chew "dents" with a thumbnail they are ok, its the really hard ones to avoid.
I may be corrected though.
Agree with Jac on the thumbnail test, and I’d definitely give him his root chew. Also good is olive wood and coffee wood as they tend to crumble rather than splinter. I’m so pleased to hear Hugo’s teething is going well, that’s fab. Because Stilton’s teething was so full on, we ended up giving him a large range of things to try - Anco bully beef rolls (untreated dried rolled beef skin) and beef tendons have remained firm favourites and really helped him with his recent ear infections.

Ok, thank you both @Jacqui-S and @HAH he will be excited to have a good chew I’m sure.

It’s amazing how different they can all react to things @HAH. I really didn’t know any better so I went in to it expecting a really bad few months as that’s been my only experience. But I’m glad Stilton is through it now, and that’s great you had options on helping him through it!

I like to give pups at that age venison skins or similar - something they get really get their jaw muscles working along with helping with erupting back molars. I tend to avoid coffee wood etc... as I get a bit worried about the desire to chew cracking a tooth, probably just my paranoia though about teeth!

Thanks! My paranoia is choking on pigs ears, or softer type chews as they get soft and they rip pieces off 😅 I usually stay away because of that worry. I gave Hugo a pigs ear not too long ago and he did well with it… I took away the last 1/3 of it though because I was worried of choking. I’ll have a look at the pet store next time and see about venison skin chews :)
