Yes the toilet signals are sometimes difficult. I am still letting Red out when I think she wants to go. Most times she obliges. The weirdest one is bedtime. I say ‘Do you want a wee?’, I grab the big torch, she watches me unlock the back door, we both go out the door into the side bit that leads to the garden. If she wants a wee, she walks down to the garden. If she doesn’t, she just stands there. I hear myself saying ‘do you need a wee Red? No wee? Ok no wee’. Back inside we go. It’s a little ritual. I wish she would just not attempt to go out if she doesn’t need a wee but that’s her way of telling me 😂

Unfortunately Toffee also stares at the door when he has decided it’s time for his walk in the afternoon. Today I was trying to do some work on OH's end of year accounts and Toffee went to the door over and over again, I kept taking him out for a wee / poo before I realised what he really wanted  . I decided I might as well give up on the accounts and go out.

I don’t think Ariel associates the door with letting us know it’s her bathroom time. Instead she’ll come over to us and quickly/firmly “nibble” our hands or beside our knees. If we ignore her for a short time, the paw comes up to swat our knees. It’s the absolute only time she acts like this so it’s a no-brainer for us. That being said, I don’t know how she’d signal someone other than us who wouldn’t understand what she’s doing!

Ours both do the stare. If that is ignored they'll pace toward the kitchen and back to stare some more. It's different to the "is it dinner time?" stare. If it's a desperate poo needed there may be a tiny whine too. They do the stare in the middle of the night too...somehow I can feel it and it wakes me up.
