To the dog that no one knew

The dog was found in the hedgerow , at the side of a road . An elderly boy of no particular breed , cold wet and almost gone . The kind couple who found him took him straight to the Vets , Medivet in Biggleswade , who tried to hard to revive him , he had the best of care but sadly it was not enough . There was no microchip , no collar or ID , but they gave him the name of Chilli .
I guess I felt obliged to mark his passing , this poor lad , like so many more who pass away unclaimed ,
Rest in Peace Chilli xx

So very sad. RIP Chilli. Older dogs are sometimes known to wander off to die on their own. They seem to know. Perhaps he had been let out for his nightly duty and wandered off. It happened to our friends’ dog down the road. Thankfully OH and I found him under a porch and were able to get him out in time for his people to say goodbye.

My sister’s dog took herself into the cold winter’s night in the rain to die under the hedge in the garden. She was 17 years old, a corgi mix. My sister found her and carried her inside to her bed and sat with her until she died. She also told her four kids that Kim was going and they sat around petting her. Later, my sister told me she thought she’d done the wrong thing, that perhaps her dog wanted to be away from everything to die peacefully.

I hope this was the case for Chilli, that he’d taken himself off to die. But I pity his owners (if hopefully there were owners) who now have no idea what happened to him. Does the vet put up notices about anonymous dogs who were brought in and who died?

Poor little Chilli. Many years ago I was gun dog training with a chap in the depths of the countryside and we found a little old dog in a ditch, miles from any house. We did eventually track the owner down who didn't seem at all pleased, I reckon they had abandoned the poor little mite.
