Total sensory overload

Not a great start to the day ! We were due an engineer to fit a smart metre , so I decided to take both dogs to school with Silas , not one of my better ideas ! Total and absolute nightmare , Nelly being well used to this was fine, but it was all too much for Reuben this morning . First it was Silas , massive excitement , then lots of other children , even more excitement and then to top it all , a gang of workmen setting up barriers on the lane in readiness for road works , excitement now out of control , big style ! Debbie carried on with Silas and Nelly , I walked in the opposite direction with Reuben , who took a good ten minutes to climb down off the ceiling . Got home frazzled , and then the gasman arrived , more excitement , this was like all his Christmas gifts in one short space of time !! More lead and village walks needed , baby steps x

Oh Kate, how exhausting for you. But no harm done - it’s maybe quite useful to calibrate Reuben’s arousal a bit? We had this back in May when we thought it’d be fun to go on a steam train for my mums birthday, completely overlooking the manically busy seaside resort (Paignton) we’d have to negotiate including indoor car park, metal open staircases, hoardes of holidaymakers etc etc before we even got to the train. Kipper tried his best but it was all new and too much very quickly, so we turned round and he went off with OH for a lovely coast walk while I carried on with my mum. It was a very good lesson for us to remember these things! But over time it definitely improves, with gentle introductions.

The plan ! Two or three mornings a week , I will set off for school with Reuben , Debbie will have Nelly and take her on to school whereas I will just go a short way with them and then , like this morning, take a different route through the village, hopefully avoiding too much excitement all at once , just to ease him in gently . Its my fault entirely ,all just too much for the poor lad x
