Training Molly

Today was our 2nd session and very informative and helpful it was too.

We're now in the process of re-training our use of the clicker. To briefly explain why, my husband has used the clicker for recall; he has had a laryngectomy so has a prosthetic voice and can't blow a whistle.

I've also fixed the cue for Molly's retrieving to 1 item and as acknowledged previously have always done these things in the garden, so out of context and with another item she is not sure what she is being asked to do. So, a lot of re-training needed before we get to gun dog training.

I'm really pleased with and impressed with this trainer, she's superb, and doesn't actually say "you've done it all wrong" |( She does say though that its not so much the place I'm training in but the items I'm using and the way I'm doing it is more hunting than straight retrieving, which is true because I've been trying to make it fun for Molls. I also waffle on all the time rather than keeping quiet and only using a word I want her to connect with the activity she's doing.

I know I should have read more and started this sooner but at least Molly is keen and pretty quick to grasp what I'm trying to do.

As they used to say on Gardener's Question Time - onward and upwards.

So pleased it's going so well. Perhaps your husband could use a bell or rattle for recall - it wouldn't take long to pair a sound like that with food so that Molly understands what it means.
The trainer has given us a 'squeeker', similar to the thing in a squeaky toy, so my husband can use that, and so will I for recall, so we can use the clicker for its proper purpose.

We had a class today and guess what? We're starting retrieve training :celebrate: yayayay :happyfeet::smiledog: Lots of homework before our next session but we're both tickled pink.
Molly loves this, as we approach the site she starts to squeak with anticipation and her tail doesn't stop whirling the whole time.

We've now got to get stuck in and practice all we've been taught :fingers: Wish us luck all you gun dog specialists

Why would you be a rubbish owner ? :| Molly adores you, it's plain to see.

What is your homework?
What I mean is I wasn't giving her enough to keep her brain working and help her to develop her instincts. She's 3 now and I should have started this training earlier - like you did with Cassie. She is a happy little dog but has been a bit short changed, though it's all coming together now

Homework is still some basic stuff like 'stay' at a distance. The retrieve work we've now started is picking up a dummy, though not a proper gun dog dummy at this stage and bringing to hand. This we're starting close by and gradually increasing the distance. Once that is reliable we'll go on to finding and bringing to hand a dummy she can't see - blind retrieve I guess.
Is that the sort of thing you did with Cassie to start with?
