Training with spaniels

My friends own a beautiful meadow next to the river Exe where we hold gundog training classes. After helping other people with their dogs yesterday I grabbed the chance to have a bit of fun with my own dogs. This is Amy my young Clumber and Caddie my still very young at heart springer. She will be 11 very soon but still keen as mustard.
This is a nice exercise practising all sorts of different things like sit/stay at distance, honouring another dog's retrieve, and of course nice delivery to hand from water. And all accompanied by some lovely bird song! Best way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

So lovely, Heidrun. How Caddie is poised as you return, with her elbows bent, is just like Willow in a similar (although nowhere near as complex!) scenario. Just ready to explode forwards on the word :inlove:

Caddie has been one of the easiest dogs I have ever trained because retrieving and hunting are the two best things in life as far as she is concerned. The only thing I have ever had to work hard at with her is steadiness, that's the flip side of being so keen to retrieve. So at almost 11years of age I will still set up exercises to practise steadiness with her almost daily. That's why I sent Amy first because Caddie was about to explode from the starting blocks. :)

Oh that's great!! Caddy is like a coiled spring...

I have trained my two to wait for their names as a cue to go for a retrieve. They are not as good as yours yet though! (But we'll get there...)

Lovely to see the 'older' dogs happy doing what they love, Caddie is wonderful. I love the way her bum doesn't quite touch the ground so she can get going quickly!!. I have managed to teach Hattie & Charlie to wait for their names one at a time too. Nice to be able to say that amongst the pro's :giggl: xx
