Travels with my dog.

Have fun Candy, I love train travel but in Maisy's puppy days it was bit of a nightmare, only because she was going through the crocopup phase though.

Also, agreeing with @Emily_Babbelhund here, it is awkward when a large dog wants to lay down and people are getting on and off the train frequently (tutting as they step over sleeping hound). Keep an eye on the tail and keeping tucking it in or protecting it with your foot, we had a few close calls there with people bringing bicycles on (we used to sit in the roomy area for wheelchairs, pushchairs etc).

Something I did in the end was pay a bit extra for first class, hardly anyone uses it and there is no 'through traffic'.
Have a nice trip.

I had Carbon on the very crowded - standing room only - tram that goes from the suburbs into the centre of Florence. What a nightmare the tail was! I'm NOT used to a dog with a tail, so while I'm very experienced at keeping feet and legs protected, I could not figure out how to do it while standing with the tail. I really needed a third leg to keep track of that tail. Carbon's tail goes constantly and it just kept popping out from where I'd tuck it behind my leg.

I'm not at all for docking dogs tail (it wasn't my choice to dock Brogan's) but boy howdy was it easier with Brogan who had no tail to worry over.

Not sure about in the UK, but I loved first class for Germany/Austria/Italy because instead of slick floors they had carpeting. Made long journeys much nicer for Brogan. I used to buy in advance, so really not much price difference at all.

@Candy , this is a great thread and I will be following with interest! Well done for making your trip as Joy friendly as possible, I'm sure it will be great fun.
I too enjoy the occasional journey by train, and have the idea of introducing Cassie to it by making a short local journey to Ludlow, I think your post will spur me on to do it now!

Although, with Cassie's belief that the world is her oyster and waiting for her to grace it, it will be interesting! I think I need further tuition from @Emily_Babbelhund as to how to get her to tuck herself away :)

I was on the crowded airport train with Keir last year - standing room only, but I sat on the floor with him between my legs to protect his paws and tail.

:)
I used to do this in the area where the doors are which is in between the two lots of seating. Not very good on the knees and I was a bit paranoid about leaning on the doors, they have been known to open on the wrong side!

I think trains should be more dogfriendly - in other words, if they are not allowed on the seats, they should make the windows lower so they can see outside. Maisy would love that!

Next stop Norwich! Joy is asleep under my seat. Liz, the friend I' m visiting has just sent me a text saying she's bought the most beautiful bed for her doggy guest and steak for our evening meal. She's a wonderful cook ( used to work as a chef) so it's bound to be really good.

Oh yum! I'm glad GGJ will have luxury sleeping arrangements - no less than she deserves
