Trazodone

The vet has prescribed Trazodone (50mg) for Ella. This is to be used prior to a vet visit, to take the edge off her anxiety.

She has suggested that we do a test at home in the next couple of weeks, to see how it affects her. The two things to look for are how long it takes to kick in (apparently it can take between 1 and 2 hours) and whether the 2 tablets are enough to make a difference (apparently some dogs require up to 4 but we need to test with the lower dose first).

Has anyone else had experience with this medication?

I have no experience with this medication. We have this med for my mum at hand if her anxiety will go out of hands....We contacted a geriatric specialist for my mum can’t have all sorts of medication as she is very reactive to some and will be doped after one tablet...This I was told has less side effects, and they have very good outcome with it in human medicin!

Yes, Otter has Trazodone. She is doing very well on it, low side effects, not that I have noticed anything. Sedation takes an hour, or more if taken with food.

Brogan had this prescribed for the first few days after his two TPLOs to help him rest. I didn't notice any bad side effects: he was just very stoned. I don't remember the dosage, but then he was also on morphine so the effect would have been stronger than alone. I've also been prescribed trazodone for myself, though it was long ago. I don't remember anything bad about it, just that it makes you sleepy.

I hope you'll find what works for Ella so she can have an easier time at the vet.
