Tuppy’s teeth

Tuppy had to be starved this morning because she was going to the vets today for a dental operation. She wasn’t impressed, especially as, instead of her usual treat hunt, I took her into the garden on her lead so that she couldn’t find anything to scavenge! The final straw was when we came back indoors and she stood hopefully by the firmly closed treat cupboard!

Fortunately all seems well, although she’s had eight teeth removed, more than the vet originally thought. Poor Tuppy hadn’t shown any signs of being in pain beforehand but maybe she should have had the procedure earlier, although the vet didn’t seem to think it was urgent when he did the initial examination about a month ago. Three of the teeth extracted together were concealing an abcess, so she has a course of antibiotics too. A different vet actually did the operation - which is great because dental procedures are apparently one of his specialities.

She now not only has to have soft food for three weeks but also on-lead walking only, even in the garden. She was ready for her supper when we got home late afternoon and ate three helpings! We see the vet again on Thursday for a check-up.

She’s actually more lively than I thought she would be, not spending more than a few minutes on her bed!

Dear Tuppy, that’s a fair procedure for anyone and it sounds like she’s been very stoic. Don’t feel bad about not spotting the urgency, we know how brilliant dogs are at masking discomfort and teeth especially are difficult to keep an eye on. Really good to get on top of that abscess, you should be proud of yourself - great dog parenting x

Poor Tuppy, that sounds like it must have all been quite sore. It's a good sign that she managed three helpings of her tea though, and I'm sure she'll make a good recovery with your expert care. Sending  :thelambiesarecoming::thelambiesarecoming::thelambiesarecoming::thelambiesarecoming:

She must be feeling great with all the pain meds. I guess the abscess must’ve been painful. I wish Tuppy a very speedy recovery xxx

How is she this morning Carol @Granca
She’s doing well thank you Cath. She was coughing a bit when she first woke up, but that seems to have settled now. She’s had a good breakfast, taken her antibiotic sandwich with no problem, been in the garden (a bit miffed at being on her lead!) and then slept. She’s now left her bed to lie on the sofa beside me, so I may have to stay here for a bit!

When she was under the anaesthetic the vet also checked her larynx because I had noticed her coughing/choking occasionally. As they had thought, she has an age-related problem with one side of her larynx, but apparently it’s nothing to worry about and doesn’t need any treatment at the moment. He also checked her eyes, as they’re beginning to look a bit cloudy. She’s probably not able to see so well now in the dark, but her daytime vision should be ok - if she were a human she would need glasses, though!

Again, taking advantage of the anaesthetic, the nurse clipped her claws. The usual clipping is a bit long (and quick!) because she’s a bit wary, so she’s now got very smart paws too! In all, she’s had a good MOT!

Don’t feel bad about not spotting the urgency,
Thanks, but I can’t help wondering how on earth I didn’t know. She must have been in pain, but didn’t show any discomfort. It’s a huge relief that it’s all gone well so far and I hope she will respond well to the Loxicom when she has to have that this afternoon.

I tend to think that of all breeds of dog Labradors are very stoical and don't tend to make a fuss about things, so try not to feel bad about not knowing that she was in pain. My first dog was a Lurcher who developed a terrible limp due to what turned out to be a dead leaf stuck to his paw. A Labrador would probably not have even noticed!
