UK ticks - spring’s here!

I'm awful at this... We just don't have ticks here and fleas are a rare occurrence so I treat very sporadically and only when I think we have to. My friend warned me about ticks in west Wales, and Monty's treatment would have been at least five weeks before we went., but fortunately no obvious ticks on him or us at all.
Worming I do at least four times a year as we don't do any other testing for them.

I saw an elderly lady yesterday with an absolutely classic target lesion on the side of her knee.
Not obviously been in any high risk places and not an animal lover at all. Only risk was spending the weekend at her static caravan on hard standing at a very well manicured site.
Condemned her to 3 weeks of doxycycline.

I do the same thing, I think we are lucky. Cassie is the only dog (or cat) that I've had who just doesn't get fleas. Amazing. Nor does she get troubled with ticks, although she's had one this year after walking in a different place along side a river in thick vegetation, apparently this increases the risk. I removed it easily with a tick remover, a good thing to have I now know. My daughter could see 2 walking over Reeva when they got in the car to travel together, she is treated though.

We've been using Avantix on Holly for years but the vet will no longer supply it as its 'not environmentally friendly'. They're offering Nexgard but its almost twice the price. It's also a pill, which means putting some form of chemical into Holly rather than applying it to her coat.

Has anyone got experience of Nexgard?

Yes we've used it sporadically on Bear and Monty, it comes as part of Monty's vet plan so I don't know the price, but I get enough from them to use for Bear too. Monty's probably had it for close to five years now, and we've never had an issue with it, fingers crossed. But I certainly don't give it every month, maybe three to four times a year- if I see a flea or if I know we are going somewhere where ticks are prevalent.

Nexgard has the same main active ingredient as Bravecto. It’s part of the izoxazoline group, and there have been many reports of neurological damage after giving dogs those types of drugs. Personally, I would never give a tablet for fleas/ticks. I would actually use a natural one (ideally Billy No Mates as it has really good reviews, however it may not be safe for use during pregnancy for Oreo).
I don’t give Oreo any flea/tick treatment unless we are going on holiday within Scotlan between March - September.

Yes, I use Nexgard Spectra for Xena (it does flea and worm) every spring/summer. She gets Milpro for worms for the rest of the year. Ticks aren't an issue in suburban NZ, but I can't get away with not using a flea treatment unfortunately. There's no perfect solution when it comes to treating our pets, I just cross my fingers and hope for the best.

I had one of those on my thigh a few years ago. Had a months course of doxy. A few days ago @Mr Beanwood dug a tick out of my waist, I was borderline hysterical!
