Updates on Mas.

Just because I can’t keep track of all of the threads I’m on today 🙈

Quite frankly I’m doing this to keep myself busy because there is only so many times you can refresh your phone to see if you have signal.

So the basics are:

Mas was sick on Tuesday evening once.

Overnight he threw up multiple times and had loose stools at least 3 times (our carpets need to be burnt at this stage).

Wednesday morning extremely lethargic. Gave him a tablespoon of rice about lunchtime, came up straight away.

Took him to the vets at 3pm who thought he could feel a thickening of his bowel which indicated a possible blockage. Mas fell asleep on the vets floor. Sent straight to the hospital.

Hospital put him under sedation and X-ray but couldn’t find a blockage. Put on IV meds and kept overnight.

This morning was cleared to leave but began being sick again after he had eaten, decision Made to keep him in till this afternoon.

Afternoon call - Maslow still being violently sick and now refusing all attempts of food.

Latest phone call, they haven’t made any progress with the stopping him being sick and seem convinced that there is a blockage that isn’t showing up on X-ray. So they are now sedating him again and giving him a barium meal which SHOULD identify any partial or total blockage in his bowels.

The bill is currently at £1000 😳 I just rang Pet plan (thank for for insurance!) and cancelled one policy (Leo) and informed them about Mas.. then cried down the phone 🙄.

@snowbunny im scarily close to just that.

The vets just rang and asked whether we wanted a cremation. I totally freaked out and thought they were talking about Mas. OH then took the phone and explained, it was Leos vets ringing 😩

Sorry to hear this - it's so stressful! I was a wreck during the "we don't know what is going on stage". It was actually a relief when we finally confirmed there was a blockage. Hang in there.

Ok the vet has rang and asked us to come and see him.

The barium tests show that nothing is passing from the stomach into his intestines.

They have provisionally diagnosed him with an Ileus? On way to hospital now does anyone know anything about this so I know what questions to ask

Ileus (functional or paralytic) is a term used to denote temporary and reversible obstruction in the intestines caused by bowel motility problems. ... Therefore, ileus is not a primary disease, rather a result due to some other disease or condition affecting motility of intestine.

Had to Google it...

A quick google brought up this -

It’s a “A temporary paralysis of a portion of the intestines occurs typically after abdominal surgery. Since the intestinal content of this portion is unable to move forward, food or drink should be avoided until peristaltic sound is heard, by auscultation (use of a stethoscope) of the area where this portion lies. Intestinal atony or paralysis may be caused by inhibitory neural reflexes, inflammation or other implication of neurohumoral peptides.”

Treatment
Traditionally, nothing by mouth was considered to be mandatory in all cases, but gentle feeding by enteral feeding tube may help to restore motility by triggering the gut's normal feedback signals, so this is the recommended management initially.[7]When the patient has severe, persistent signs that motility is completely disrupted, nasogastric suction and parenteralnutrition may be required until passage is restored. In such cases, continuing aggressive enteral feeding causes a risk of perforating the gut.
Several options are available in the case of paralytic ileus. Most treatment is supportive. If caused by medication, the offending agent is discontinued or reduced. Bowel movements may be stimulated by prescribing lactulose, erythromycin or, in severe cases that are thought to have a neurological component (such as Ogilvie's syndrome), neostigmine. There is also evidence from a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that chewing gum, as a form of 'sham feeding', may stimulate gastrointestinal motility in the post-operative period and reduce the duration of postoperative ileus.[8]
If possible the underlying cause is corrected (e.g. replace electrolytes).“

Like the others I’ve just googled it @Leanne , it sounds like an ileus is an obstruction in the intestine, meaning there’s not the usual motility I.e. contractions moving matter through the system - and the underlying cause can be many things including infection, blockage, septicemia, shock, toxicity: Intestinal Disorder (Loss of Motility) in Dogs
The priority is to discover the underlying cause of the ileus, so I guess questions might be what do they think it is, can they rule anything out, what are the risks at the moment, what are the risks based on any different treatment options and what do they think will happen next. Best of luck, I’m sure it’ll help to talk to them xxx
