In particular, watermelon RIND...which Simba has eaten a chunk of. The leftover of OH’s piece which he conveniently left within scarfing range 😡

Simba strikes again....

Watermelon rind was nearly the undoing of my first Labby but in that case it was half a watermelon’s worth and the stalk (which was the main problem). I’m sure Simba will be just fine! But you just wonder what the attraction is... Probably more of an irresistible compulsion. Surely it can’t be that enjoyable...

Crumbs!

I hope he‘s OK xx

I’ve just googled it -
While watermelon rind doesn't contain anything hazardous to dogs, the texture and toughness of the rind is problematic. ... But it's difficult to ensure your dog will chew the rind thoroughly before swallowing, and larger pieces can cause gastrointestinal blockage or upset.

I’m very allergic (anaphylactic allergic) to melon.

Its easy to avoid - I just have to watch out with bar made cocktails and restaurant fruit salad. Waitresses are alert to nut allergies but a bit Laissez-faire when it comes to melon. Once or twice they’ve said ‘no’ when Ive asked then it’s arrived with melon in. 😵

He slept fine last night. Ate breakfast this morning. He just had one rind - ie the leftover of one triangle slice. I did the same googling and saw the warnings about blockage, etc.

He LOVES watermelon! I will often give him a little piece of the fruit part when I have a slice. But I’ve always been careful with the rind because of the digestion issue. But OH was distracted and left his plate of two leftover rinds on the couch, at nose level...😣 I was sitting next to the couch but reading so wasn’t paying attention until I heard the crunching. Sigh. At least I managed to whisk the other one away.

So, we’ll see how things go today.
