What gives us the right?

OK, late evening post, but I've just watched the BBC News and there's the first female jockey to win some big horse race or other and that would be lovely and laudable, but she was hitting her horse. How can this be even approaching OK? I don't know much about horses, they're a bit big for me, I'm very much a dog person, but why is hurting them allowed? Even sort of admired it seems? It should all be banned as far as I'm concerned. Not the racing, the hitting. Just saying. Rant over (for now, anyway)

I think racing should be banned. The industry as it currently is is very cruel. There was a campaign to ban it in Australia a few months ago, but sadly it’s big bucks for some and that’s difficult to compete against.

Did you see her post race interview? If not it might be worth watching it :)

There are rules about use of the whip.

In some cases, maybe. I can't speak for Australia, but in the Uk advances have been made in welfare and breeding, and life after racing for those horses that don't make the grade, such as Racehorse to riding Horse, which gives the horse a meaningful life and provides a lot of pleasure for the people involved.
To me, wanting to ban it is like stopping everyone keeping dogs because so many bad things go on, or saying that all parents are going to abuse their children because some do so.

Mmmm, I'm on the side of FAR more caution and welfare considerations in horse racing. How many horses died during this meeting last year? 7 was it? Surely that can't be right.
I'm also not overly keen on eventing any more - something I used to love but I've seen too many dreadful accidents.

Just recently there was a major race and the results were on the news, after which the newsreader just happened to mention that a horse had fallen and had to be put down. It was just a passing comment as if it didn't matter, very, very sad.

I used to ride, and enjoyed watching horse racing, but I'm far less comfortable about it as time goes on. The way that everyday "pet" horses are normally trained to be ridden makes me cringe, too; it seems totally unethical to train a prey animal using largely negative reinforcement techniques and often SO much coercion. I'm interested in the use of more modern methods of training (such as Alexandra Kurland's techniques) which are far more humane than traditional methods, but it appears the horse world has far farther to go than the dog world in adopting this as the norm.

That said, I am not educated enough to come out with a strong viewpoint that it should be banned; it just makes me uncomfortable, and for that reason, I choose not to partake in any way these days.

This is an obvious anti-horseracing propaganda video, but also makes an interesting point:

The fact that only four out of eighteen horses finished the National Hunt Race is a serious cause for concern. Something needs to change there.

Race Horse Death Watch reports that there have been over 1,500 deaths on British race courses in the last ten years - 40 already this year alone. For sport? Going back to the video, if there were that many deaths of footballers, or race car drivers, something would be done.

I struggle with this one. I grew up with horses and my first horse was my first true love. A beautiful sole that I still think of often.

She was a bloody stubborn Welsh X thoroughbred, liver chestnut with four white socks. A completely stubborn and absolutely wonderful mare.

However. I often rode her with a three ring snaffle and a straight martingale and I had definitely worn spurs on occasion.

I also broke or assisted in the breaking of many youngsters over the years.

I've spent a lot of time rethinking our methods over the time

I’m terrified of horses!

When I went on holiday in the Dominican my friends all wanted to go horseback riding through the mountains and convinced me it would be fine.

Never been so scared in my life. I ended up being put on the donkey they give to the kids plodding along behind everyone else 🙈

And I have a strong hatred for Cheltenham.

My horses have come second all week.

Except today.. when his shoe has fallen off!

Oh no he’s had to be put to sleep.

That’s the end of my horse racing career, I only put my first bet on on Monday.

I’m sat having a little sniffle at my desk 😭💔

They don’t have to be put to sleep. But it’s hugely expensive to help them recover. And not profitable. And when sentient beings are used for profit, it’s easy for cruelty to enter the scene. They shouldn’t be allowed to be put in a situation in the first place where they get so badly injured, just for human fun and games.
