What is going on??

Something is definitely off with Simba. I can’t figure it out. On the weekend we went for a long walk. When we came back, it was time for supper about an hour later. He was curled up on his bed. Not bugging us to eat. Weird. Put food out. He finally ambled over and ate it. Okaaayyy…..

That night (middle of night, I mean, after we had all been asleep for awhile): got up to let him out. He came back after presumably doing his thing. Back up to his bed. Seconds later, whining to go out. Huh? Let him out. Came inside and back to bed. Seconds later, whined to go out. This happened three times. Very unusual.

Next morning: Put food out. Stared at it. Picked some up. Dropped it out of his mouth. Nibbled those off the floor. After a bit of fussing around, ate the food. This is very weird. I thought maybe - something in his mouth? Tooth broken? He had chewed on a frozen stick while on the walk, so maybe? I tried to look at his mouth. He let me lift on side of the lips but growled slightly at me.

This was Sunday. Decided we’d see how he was that night.Ate his supper Sunday night, no issues. Ate breakfast and supper yesterday, no issues. Same routine of prancing around, anxious to eat like he usually does. Ok, so will keep an eye out but hopefully whatever it was is resolved or getting better. I did get a chance to look at both sides of the outside of his teeth yesterday, I didn’t see anything but couldn’t see the inside, of course.

Last night: the same wanting to be outside routine. He was in and out twice in the span of minutes. morning: looked at his food. Picked up a kibble. Dropped it on the floor. Drank his water. Went to bed.

His activity level is normal. Tail wagging, energy, happy to go for walks. Pees and poos normal. I did check the yard to see if there was any diarrhea or vomit anywhere. Nothing.

I’m still thinking maybe something in the mouth? I dunno. OH will have to take him to vet today as I’m working. Ugh. Not looking forward to that whole scenario as there is no way in God’s green earth he will let them look at his mouth. Our vet visits are not happy ones when they are just checkups.

It’s such a weird combo of symptoms!

Update: he ate about half his breakfast but pretty half-heartedly. Took him for a walk but he didn’t have a lot of oomph. So came home after not going far. :(
Waiting for the vets to open so we can make an appointment. OH and I will go together, phew. Work was ok with me stepping out for a bit to do that. As much as I would like to avoid the stressful vet visit, I would like to be there to see what they say. I’m still guessing something to do with the mouth, but who knows.

Is his poo OK? Coco gets like this occasionally and I THINK he is constipated when it happens, and maybe hasn't drunk enough water - I haven't managed to really nail it down though.

Maybe his mouth - is he drooling?

Best wishes for the vet visit, I know how traumatic it can be for all.

He has drank quite a lot lately. Poos seem to be normal. No drooling. Just a mystery. I just feel like we’ll go through all the trauma of the vet visit to get nothing definitive back. But who knows?

Hopefully the vet can at least rule some stuff out? This sounds really confusing, poor Simba and you. The only additional thing I can think is to keep a really detailed diary for a few days of exercise, food, behaviour and environmental observations - light levels, temperature, noises, smells etc. It just might help to see a pattern if nothing obvious emerges in the next day or two.

Update at noon: he has eaten his breakfast, according yo OH , “not with his usual enthusiasm” which has been the case the last couple days. Came home at lunch to happy greetings. I’ll try taking him for a walk after I’ve eaten.
Here he is doing his “I’m going to stand here and look like I want to come in but when you open the door I’ll look at you and not move” routine. This is nothing new….he has always been a bit weird about going in/out. 🤷🏻‍♀️image.jpg

He chewed on a frozen stick you wrote....my guess is that he hurt something in his mouth, a cut or splinter maybe? Does he drool more?
No drooling!

Hmmm @Kelsey&Axel…. No but I suppose that’s an avenue to check? Maybe the old stuff has gone or is going bad? But he was also refusing his treats

Vet was stumped. He did blood work, which all came back good, so could rule out liver, kidney, etc. Suggested it could possibly be something that is causing an intermittent blockage on and off, but they would have to do further examination to rule that out. So for now keep monitoring and if it keeps happening or there’s a sudden change, to bring him in.

He has just happily wolfed down supper and is looking for more. |(
Who knows??

That is weird - if he continues to eat and behave normally you may never know, but if he’s back to his old self and the vet didn’t find anything , hopefully it’s all’s well that ends well (minus the vet bill). Hope he keeps on doing well today. 🤞

How did Simba cope with the vet trip?
Well it was ok. As usual he’s happy to go in. We chatted with the vet quite a bit about what’s been going on, but when we decided on the blood tests we put a muzzle on him and they took him into the back where they have more staff to handle him and keep everyone safe. Heard a few angry noises from the pooch so I’m sure he wasn’t happy, but he trotted out happily. So it went better than I thought it might, tbh.

He slept normally last night (phew) and this morning ate breakfast happily and was eager for his walk. I even brushed his teeth. Do basically back to normal, thankfully. We’ll see if it lasts. 🙏
