Stinky Dog!

My goodness Zaba is a stinky dog! All my doors are open to try and air the house. He isn’t bathed, he swims every day and I rub him over with Cowboy Magic every day when he gets home from his walk. Today OH made sure he swam in a free flowing stream in really clean spring water at the end of the walk. He’s now in his dressing gown drying off.

Any ideas what else I can do? Of course, I can’t change his food as he isn’t my dog.

I’ve had entire males before, but never this stinkyness!

Maybe you could tactfully say that none of the other dogs you've met have this "boy smell?"

It could be a skin issue?

I can confirm that my very unwashed boy has minimal odour. I always ask visitors if the house smells because I'm paranoid!

What is the smell? Anal glands? Yeast? Could be related to his diet—high carb? Does he chew himself? Could be bad breath, too. How are his teeth and gums?

My boy is intact and does not have a boy smell. He can get smelly from stinky water, not being dried properly, or if he licks his fur.

What kind of smell is it? Just wet dog or something more? Carbon had that funny brie cheesy smell last summer when he swam every day. The vet said it was some sort of fungal thing and gave me special shampoo but it went away on it's own after he stopped swimming.

Do you know if Zaba's mum washes his bed? That could be part of it too. Maybe it's sticking to him even when he comes to your house.

But probably the food like you said. Could you somehow gently suggest a change to see if it would help?

Thanks all.

It’s not anal glands, ears or breath.

But it is kind of a bit Cheesy - ish. Or it could be the water, he usually swims in reservoirs. His Mum does wash his beds and blankets ‘tho.

Today I gave him a really good grooming and got two dogs worth of hair out of him! I’ll send him into the fresh water stream again tomorrow and then groom him again and do a sniff test.

I went with the yeast idea and for three days I’ve been using this on his feet and armpits. I’ve also been grooming him twice a day to get rid of all the loose underfur - there was a lot!

Mr Boogs is swimming him in a free flowing stream every day.

And it’s WORKING!

Thank you all! Now to find a way to tell his Mum when she gets home, her feelings are easily hurt and she’s not at all teachable.

Interesting - and good to know if ever Carbon starts smelling like a Brie again. Much better than the medical shampoo which I wasn't able to use as I don't have the facilities (you've seen my shower  ).

If I were Zaba's mum I'd be THRILLED that you figured this out. Fingers crossed that you get a better reception than you're expecting.

I use that on dogs ears too it's good. Hope his mum's ok.
She’s been my friend for many years. Zaba is her first dog. If there is anything I know something about it’s dogs, but she doesn’t like to take advice from me, so I always tread carefully.

I think I’ll wait to see if she comments on how fresh smelling he is then casually tell her.

Last summer Homer swam in the river Thames, twice a day every day and got really smelly. The whole house was smelly. Even I with very poor sense of smell could smell it in the house. I sprinkled bicarbonate of soda on the carpets a few hours before vacuuming which helped the house.

Luckily Zaba spends no time at all on carpets. During the day he’s on wooden floors and in the evening he’s on his own leather sofa. (It’s Mr Boogs sofa when each has their own, but Mr Boogs is a floor sitter and never sits on his sofa. Tatze is on mine with me and Spencer is on his dog bed by me. :))
