House training woes

I haven’t been on the forum much as I’m finding managing three dogs with very different exercise needs very time consuming.

Whilst at home the puppy needs watching almost every minute of the day that she’s not in her pen as she’s been super inventive thinking up trouble to get in to.

But it’s the puddles on the floor that are driving me to distraction and now this week she is 6 months and we are not completely reliable. It’s not that I don’t know what I’m doing, she’s my 4th puppy in the last 7 years and I’ve always reckoned that I have totally cracked it by 16 weeks. Her cues are so subtle and she wees so quickly after giving them that unless you are with her and respond immediately there is yet another puddle.

I’m not looking for suggestions, I’m using a special floor cleaner and I’ve taught her to wee on cue but she’s the first girl I’ve had for 30 years and I wondered if they were more difficult. I have a friend with a boy from the litter and I know that she hasn’t had any problems but I was thinking that it was just my lack of focus UNTIL

I was introduced and went for a walk with one of her litter sisters. This is another experienced Labrador owner and she happened to mention how almost impossible the sister was to house train, she had even had the puppy investigated for a UTI !!! I could have hugged the woman and we really bonded over this problem. Sometimes when we think we are failing it’s just that the odds are stacked against us. We will get there but the continual rain and dark nights are SO not helping!

Oh, I feel you - Squidge was a nightmare to toilet train! I don't think it's girls in general (Willow was normal), but just certain puppies. It's really demoralising, and I spent most of my time beating myself up for it.

You'll get there! At six months, Squidge was getting to the point where she was generally reliable, but definitely not 100%. Shadow was 100% at 14 weeks with NO training! :cwl:
(We didn't bring him home until 14 weeks, and he'd not been toilet trained by his breeder)

I think Squidge generally finds it harder to "hold on" when she needs a wee. Even at 14+ months she had to go out overnight (and occasionally still does at 3 years). Which might not be what you want to hear, but at least you know you're not alone!!

My dog before last (Cocker Spaniel bitch) took forever to toilet train - and I was a stay-at-home mum at the time so it wasn't lack of attention on my part. The consolation was that apart from that she was a dream - just did everything I asked with seemingly no training - so here's hoping your new pup is the same.

Quinn took forever to toilet train too! At 6 months she was pretty much there, but we had to be diligent in getting her out frequently for a long time, with some accidents up to a year old.

Spencer, our eighth pup, if you count Tatze, was our widdliest widdler. We ended up having all the kidney tests available. My supervisor OK’d the tests as she knew he was unusual and I wasn’t crying wolf. He drank gallons and weed lakes every half hour or so.

Nothing wrong with him - he was just a waterholic- he still is, but now he has a strong bladder and can hold it indoors.

Echo is 16 weeks old today and very reliable indeed. We’ve only had one indoor wee accident this week. He’s never had an indoor poo accident.

Toffee was dreadful with poos, right up until he was over a year old he would poo in his crate at night if he needed to go, never ever asked. I thought that he would have learnt from Ripple who always barks if he needs to go out in the night.
Since we’ve moved and dispensed with the crate I suspect he would just poo on the floor if he needed to go, mind you Ripple would probably eat it, then I might never know  .

Bramble took forever! Just when you think you got it nailed, she would just ...wee..I think it was close to 7 months before I totally trusted her. Her mum was just as bad, if not worse!

Chewie was probably 6 months before he was reliable and he is another one who guzzles water and needed to pee frequently. These days he can go for aaaaages and doesn't really *need* to go out in the morning before 9am, then does the biggest wee ever!
