Kipper’s got a limp

Tonight Kipper’s developed a pronounced limp on his front left leg. It’s a tricky one as I think he’s had an intermittent limp for some weeks - pretty slight, barely perceptible except the odd ‘nod’ that I wasn’t sure I’d seen - but after today’s longish walk, a play in the garden and a sleep he’s clearly uncomfortable. I’ve felt all over, there’s no obvious swelling or heat, but he’s not using his paw to grip his kong like he usually does and is occasionally holding his paw up. He’s also a bit whiny. But equally he’s leading with it when stepping down steps in the garden, and standing full square on it most of the time. He has had a lot more road walking than usual over the past few days.
Anyway, we’ll keep a close eye, not walk tomorrow and if it’s still an issue on Tuesday then I’ll phone the vet.

It's so difficult at the moment. We know these things are probably nothing, but we'd also normally have them at the vet for a check-up anyway.
Shadow's nasty cut on his foot is healing, but it has a slight infection in it. I know the vet would put him on ABs. I know that they're probably not essential, and just cleaning it well will mean it'll clear up. I know I can get ABs in our pharmacy if I need to, but I'm loathe to take another trip there because, well, sick people go there.
I feel I'm being a bad dog mum by not having him seen to, but I feel it wouldn't be responsible to take him to the vet for something that doesn't really need it.
It's so hard trying to balance everything right now.

I hope that with a couple of days of rest, Kipper is back to normal.

Entirely get this. There’s also the strange psychology that because options are limited it can make one more twitchy to seek help. I’m very averse to any unnecessary contact at the moment (and conscious of avoiding extra load on essential services) so it’s highly unlikely I’d bother the vet for a limp. But if it did go on I’d probably ask advice over the phone in case there was something I was missing. Hopefully Shadow’s foot cleans up well without needing ABs x

Thanks, I'm sure it will. I mean, we don't have ABs for every cut we have - and nor should we. So I'm keeping a very close eye on it, and will go in if it deteriorates, of course, but for now, it's just a good scrub, followed by cleaning agents and a tummy rub :)

I'm feeling exactly the same and keep watching Joy for that intermittent thing she seems to get with her left elbow joint, watching for any dip, or change in gait. If I'm at all worried I will give her a day of more gentle sniff games and less charging around, but she's young and does so love to charge around! Hope both Kipper and Shadow are OK without needing a vet visit. xxx

Everyone is stuck with that quandary at the moment and all trying to do our best. Sounds like you're doing the right thing with Shadow's cut. 👍

My vet will put pills outside for owners to pick up, apparently you 'phone when you get there and a nurse will bring medication out, put it on the wall, go back in and then you pick it up. Maybe your vet is doing something like this and you could pick up some ABs?

@HAH it must be a worry re Kipper, maybe he has a blackthorn in his foot and you can't see it? Rourke was very lame for some months, turned out he has arthritis and tendonitis in the shoulders but on low dose of prednisolone he is not lame any more (up to this moment!). I am sure it is nothing like that, try rest and see, otherwise phone vet on Tuesday for advice.
