I don’t know, I think there’s a huge dose of nostalgia with Fawlty Towers and I think (sorry) it hasn’t aged well. I grew up on it, quoted huge amounts through childhood but now I laugh at some bits but more often find it a bit squeamish. I think it was of it’s era, like Dad’s Army or Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em. I wouldn’t miss it too much, although it is definitely a prime example of 1970s/80s mainstream British comedyCan you believe that I'd never seen Fawlty Towers before? I decided to watch the first episode on the flight over from SF to Dublin as I figured I could use a chuckle. Maybe it was just that first episode, but I hated the John Cleese character so much that I just couldn't find it funny.
It may be that I just came to the show too late. I know there are shows that I found super funny at the time and still enjoy watching that I realise are totally not PC and that I probably shouldn't laugh at anymore (looking at you, Little Britain).
Or maybe you need to go past the first episode to get into it?
It is very dated but you are supposed to hate the John Cleese character, he is loathsome. It is the antics of the others, especially Polly and Manuel who go behind his back, that I like.I hated the John Cleese character so much that I just couldn't find it funny.
Ah, ok! I so totally didn't get it.you are supposed to hate the John Cleese character, he is loathsome.

'Allo 'Allo has multiple layers of irreverency (if that is a word). It works for me.On the other hand, I laughed out loud (multiple times) at an episode of 'Allo 'Allo last night. That was pretty slapstick... there may have even been an exploding loo involved. Maybe it just has to be in a (bad) French or German accent?

I'm the same - I can't abide Benny Hill, Frankie Howerd, Carry On films or any of that stuff. It's just not funny! In more modern times, I don't get how people like Harry Hill, Alan Carr and Keith Lemon manage to get TV time.I'm with @Jacqui-S on not being a fan of slapstick, so I may just not be the target audience.
My dad still waxes nostalgic about Benny Hill, so I'm not turning into mine.Yeah, I'm turning into my parents.

I don't find Fawlty Towers remotely funny but my favourite comedy of all is 'allo 'allo. As @Jacqui-S said it is the irreverency and uniqueness I think. I also agree that slapstick comedy just isn't funny; but it's purely personal opinion as OH loves FT and Benny Hill etcAh, ok! I so totally didn't get it.

Oh my hubby LOVES that. I can hear him roaring with laughter. He’ll rewind it for me to watch whatever he’s found hilarious and I’m just likeCurb your Enthusiasm.
Both classics in our house. At the time I was working with a bloke who knew every word of Fast Show and we spent the day in conversation just in quotes, brilliant times.I used to love the Fast Show and League of Gentlemen. Not only did I find both very funny but I used to watch them with my now grown up children. We used to laugh so much and I remember those precious shared times. Even now, we manage to get little sayings from them into our conversations
