Nisha and Talía (Negreta and Lulú).... a journey.

Ooooh, we are making more progress, little by little.

I've just been to sit and chat to them after their lunch (raw pig trotter, yum). Talia now comes pretty much straight to me for strokes if I'm by myself. She still won't approach if both of us are there together, so we're making a point of going in separately. They're better with me than with J anyway, which isn't at all surprising, although Talia did approach him for a sniff earlier today.

But the big news is that, when I was stroking Talia, Nisha came up to me and sniffed me!!! :shock:
She was just standing and staring, and I could see her trying to process what was going on, then she walked forwards and SNIFF! I made sure not to make any eye contact with her because I didn't want to put any pressure on her, and she stepped back after the sniff, but yay!! She then continued to stare at me with a very confused look for the longest time in - get this - complete silence.

This is a very exciting development and totally unexpected.

Me too. I'd ruin it all by trying to cuddle her if she got close enough. That was the hardest for me when walking the shelter dogs, to respect the ones that did not want to be engaged with. I could just barely hold it together for a walk, but if it was my own dog that I had with me all the time, it would be a killer. Of all my fosters, I only had one that was a tough nut to crack, but even she let me handle her from the outset and started melting into a love bug after three weeks.

Huge respect for your wherewithal in the softly softly approach, so much patience and knowledge required. ❤

That is truly amazing news! I really wouldn't have expected that from Nisha so soon. Very, very well done for not trying to push it further for her until she makes that decision for herself. I find it so moving that despite whatever has been done to them by other people, they remain not exactly eager to engage, but at least prepared to maybe consider it. We can learn a lot from dogs if we take the time. :heart:

Talia is turning into quite the little flirt, putting her stumpy little tail over to the side when I scritch her bum. You’ve been spayed, madam!! 😂

I should probably note that it’s not all cuddles and sunshine, obviously. Even with Talia, she’s still only approaching me in a very few situations and only staying for a minute or so max before retreating again. I can now stroke her whole top and sides during this time, but she flinches away if I mistakenly use two hands at a time. And other times she doesn’t approach at all.

I felt today some lumps on one side of her body that feel like broken ribs healed wonky which is sad, but there’s no point making up stories about what that might mean. We have enough to work on in the present without dwelling on the past and since we can’t change it, it doesn’t really matter anyway. All we can do is work on what we have in front of us on any day, hour, or minute.

It’s a really heartwarming experience getting to know these two, and having them learn about us, too.

I’ll try to get some more video in the morning!

I, for one am absolutely loving these videos and updates and I can't believe it's only me, or what sort of a forum are we anyway? Looking forward to the next one and please keep them coming!

Definitely very interested and love seeing @snowbunny 's updates. It's amazing how quickly both of the girls have made progress with trust and how much richer their lives are with everything Fiona and J are doing with them. ❤

It's also inspiring me to look at consent with my relationship with Carbon and activity try to give him more choices. It's interesting for both us! 😊
