Maxx the runaway

I feel your frustration @Lab_adore - Merlin is a Very Good Boy with super recall, but there are two places where he turns into Mutant Maelstrom Merlin - one is at the beach, and the other is on a huge wide open field near us. It's something about the open space, and groups of dogs appearing in the distance, that just make him ignore my bellowing and go charging off for a joyful, boisterous meet and greet.

@Emily_Babbelhund I just played that video , Reuben instantly heard your voice and got onto the chair by the window to look for you , husky squeaking in excitement , bless xxx
Awwwww!!! :inlove:

I think Carbon was so good! Apart from a couple of 'oopsies' - you have done an amazing job @Emily_Babbelhund
He IS good - when he knows we're training recall. Real life? A bit more hit and miss, but his brain just sort of dribbles out his ears when he gets excited - I do get that.

I also thought filming this was funny, or at least watching it back afterwards. I always make such an effort to not use his name or shout "Here" when I know there's no chance of him hearing in his excitement fog and I remember myself calmly following him. However after watching the footage from that day when we got home, I realised that there I am, squeaking "Carbon! Carbon! Carbon!" as I gallumpf awkwardly down the beach after him.
So much for dignity and calm! :cwl:

Echo is the same. When he’s working or training he’s amazing. He could become a Guide Dog right now and not go much wrong. During down time he’s weird, crazy, loopy, deaf to commands, gallops like a horse, puts his paws on your shoulders, shoves his nose in your lap until you fuss him - you name it. I secretly like loopy juice Echo much more than ‘I’m an angel dog’ Echo. He’s such great fun!

 to that!

It's always funny to see the faces of people who only know Carbon in play situations when I say he's great at his SD training and absolutely pristine when he's actually working: "What? That? That maniac who won't even come when you call him and just mauled my pockets for treats??!"

Um, yeah. Same dog. I don't say much anymore about his working ability to strangers, as you can imagine. :wasntme:

On the other hand, if someone saw him in the hospital or in the airplane last year, or helping me up and down stairs, they'd probably never believe that he runs down the beach like his legs aren't connected and eats sheep poo. 😬

A few times we've been in the park in the mornings which is where we go and let Maxx run around and then we do our training. Quite often people who have encountered mad Maxx on lead and possibly had him launch at them or seen him pulling Steve along stop and comment that he looks like a completely different dog! He recalls well (mostly), plays fetch enthusiastically, walks to heel and does lots of tricks. :inlove:
