Asking for a wee.

How many times has this question been asked - 100s!

When did your pup start asking to go out for a wee?

Spencer has done all his wees outside for weeks, but he never asks to go out, I always take him out after sleeps, drinks etc. Today I thought ‘okay, I’ll see what he does without me taking him out’. Yup - he weed inside by the door!

I was quite rigid with taking Red out at certain times during the day for a long time, then we had the good weather so the doors were open all day long and Red had a wee when she wanted. Now the doors are shut, I have discovered she has a much stronger bladder. If I say ‘let’s go for a wee’ to her, she follows me outside but won’t go beyond the door - meaning she doesn’t want to go. I suppose eventually she’ll be able to tell me she wants to go like Sky. Sky stares hard at me and if I say ‘outside’ she’ll do a little prance meaning ‘yes’.

He’s very good at going on cue (busy busy).

Maybe girls are easier to toilet train than boys? He’s only my second boy puppy and Keir was the same, ‘tho he was a camel and could hold it all day!

:)

Strangely our boys were slower. Molly (1st bitch since I was a child) was much easier. She only wee'd indoors once - on her 1st day with us. When she needs to go, if the door isn't open, she will go to either of us - whoever is nearest - and dab our arm with her paw and just give 'that' look, it's unmistakeable.

I'm glad you started this thread @Boogie, we're still at the go outside have a wee, come indoors and promptly wee on the floor, stage :headbang:. Although I reckon we've made progress as all his wees are near to the door now rather than randomly all over the place .
Unfortunately there's been two lots of :poo: today where I've said to OH Toffee needs to go (I've been trying to make chutney) and OH has been too slow.
Ripple was far easier to toilet train but so much worse at everything else, and I know which I'd rather live with .

Homer can be a camel too and hold it for ages. He was accidentally left at home during the day and there was no mess.

Vanilla is the same, she can hold and hold and hold.
If she needs it she will go to the stairs, and we will ask her. If however I don't realise she is at the stairs, she will come over and stand at the back of the sofa and huff, her nose resting on armrest.

Sometimes though she will trick me, and just want a play/lay out in the garden. Got to get better at that trick....

Well done Spenser!

e made a rookie error last night and forgot to take Maxx out for a final wee. Not sure if we didn't hear him cry or if he didn't make any sound but there was a nice wet puddle right near the back door this morning

Hmmm, the poo situation seems to have escalated a bit in the last 48 hours, apart from first thing in the morning Toffee is now doing all his :poo: indoors. He squeaks and gives all the signals he wants to go, so we take him outside, he wanders about in the pen, possible wees, then lays down on the grass. We bring him in and he goes through all the squeaking etc again, we take him out, same thing again; this can be repeated several times. Then eventually he comes in and goes on the floor almost immediately before we can do anything about it.
I'm not sure what's going wrong, but I'm wondering if it's related to the anal gland thing - he's still taking antibiotics and sees the vet again next week. Or is it just a puppy thing that we will crack soon?

Does he have a crate inside? If you think he needs to go, I'd just go from pen outside to crate inside as many times as it takes for him to poo outside. Maybe try moving the outside pen to a new patch, in case there's something about where it is that he's taken an exception to.

I was going to say the same - or if he’s still small enough carry him around for a few minutes till the next visitoutside.
