Yes, I'd already decided on my "get Emily a place (or two)" plan before the whole thing came up with my house in California, so this is putting a crimp in my style, but I will come back to it. Already putting out feelers in Regensburg as it is very difficult to find small apartments in the Old Town. I imagine it will take me at least a year if not two to get settled the way I'd like, but that's ok if I know I'm doing things to get me there.

Buying something a bijou bolt holt in Regensburg sounds very wise. Refurbishing and getting your apartment up together I must admit sounds gruelling, notwithstanding the frustration of dealing with agents along the way.
It all sounds a bit topsy turvy and uncomfortable right now, but change does that to us. I am loving your long-term plans, of having small but strong mini roots in your favourite places

I wish it was an apartment! The house itself isn't too bad - a coat of paint, floor refinish, and some repairs and we're good. But I have a large garden (by California standards, not @Beanwood standards
) and it's dire. All the more painful as I've been paying the property management company's gardener weekly for 12 years. I showed photos to my friend who is a former landscape artist and she said, "You should get your money back for the gardening and tree pruning going back at least 4 years because that's the last time anyone did anything except mow the lawn." Ouch. 
But yeah, at least five trees to remove that are threatening the house (all volunteers), invasive vines to rip out, rotting trellises and arbors, overgrown mature trees to prune, sigh...
And there's a big hole in the back of the garage that my property manager didn't even notice when she did the walk through. That's pretty funny. I mean, who doesn't notice a HOLE? I guess good thing it never rains in California, right?

I love this idea of "mini roots!" I'm stealing it.
It must be difficult keeping track from a distance. I’ve found that even just trying to get my son to maintain my ‘hut’ in Scotland, so much so that I’ve now transferred it to him in the hope he will get his act together and mend the leak before it all gets too bad (it does rain in Scotland!). However, your property management company has been paid management fees, so don’t feel bad about putting a bit of pressure on.

Amigos, ML and I are working hard today - we got all my stuffy amigos and special food out of storage and now I am helping ML to catch up on office work- but how lucky are we to have such a beautiful view from our apartment in the clouds while we work!

Hola amigos! Come and have a fiesta with me, because ML has just got my blood test results back from my visit to my muy simpatica doctor and FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, I am negative for Leishmaniasis! Weeeeee!!!!!
My doctor was also worried that I was again anaemic because I have such a pale tongue and gums, but it turns out that I am just fashionably embracing the cooler color palette of fall, because my blood values are just fine. Que bien!
Claro que si, I personally would not have minded being positive for Leish as then I would have gotten another round of butter-ball chemo treatment - que rico! I have so many fond memories of that month three years ago when I got to start each day with half a dozen butter balls and three breakfasts. Los dias magicos, amigos. See, a gentleman like me can see a bright side in ANY situation, no?
