Sounds like a good plan. I hope you can find what you're looking for.

Yes, I'd already decided on my "get Emily a place (or two)" plan before the whole thing came up with my house in California, so this is putting a crimp in my style, but I will come back to it. Already putting out feelers in Regensburg as it is very difficult to find small apartments in the Old Town. I imagine it will take me at least a year if not two to get settled the way I'd like, but that's ok if I know I'm doing things to get me there. It also sounds like you’ve got a year of planning and preparing which might be a bit stressful at times but will result in a load of stress being taken OFF your shoulders, so try to remember that when the going gets tough!
Maybe, but this is a HUGE one, and I think very brave.I'm SO slow to make any big decisions,
I wish it was an apartment! The house itself isn't too bad - a coat of paint, floor refinish, and some repairs and we're good. But I have a large garden (by California standards, not @Beanwood standardsRefurbishing and getting your apartment up together I must admit sounds gruelling,
I love this idea of "mini roots!" I'm stealing it.small but strong mini roots in your favourite places
