-7 and a bit this morning. Had to scream NO! at Poppy to stop her going on the ice of the partially frozen river.

What temperature would give cause for concern re walking a Labrador? Googling is a bit vague on the subject but I'm guessing pretty cold because of the Canadian heritage.

I can't fathom this level of cold . We never have to worry about cold but we have to be so careful in summer to make sure Maxx doesn't over heat. Well we do in a normal summer but yesterday I had to get a fleece out again. Crazy

I really think I'm going to do the sleeping on the sofa thing tonight. I want to go to bed now, where it's warm. It's warm here, by the Fireinametalbox, I have a huge, comfortable double drop-end sofa and GGJ is happily snoring in her downstairs bed. It's not something I'd make a habit of apart from in really cold weather, so it just might be going to happen tonight because....well, why not?

Cool and rain showers here. We are all in longs and jumpers. So weird. We have only invited ourselves into the neighbour's pool once so far and had to get out because R was shivering...

My youngest son, DiL and two little grandchildren have been staying here for two days while they’re having a new boiler fitted at their house. I haven’t used my (automatic) car since the snow came last Sunday because my road is just sheet ice and on a slight hill. However, yesterday my son borrowed it to collect some storage crates because it has a larger boot than theirs. He then phoned to say he’s keeping it at their house until the ice clears because it’s not good on the hills! We’re due to have rain and +12 degrees tomorrow!

@Granca, sheet of ice outside my house as well, but I can just about get out as the other side of the road has melted a little, they get sun that side. What make automatic do you have, mine is a Honda Jazz and I must admit it does slip and slide on my drive.

Mine is a Peugeot. It can be driven manually as well, but my son said that now is not a good time to try that! Their manual Nissan copes well.

Yes, that’s the problem. The temperature has stayed below freezing but even though the sun has been shining for the last two days the road outside my house is still covered in ice. It’s a U-shaped side road, not a through road, so only generally has residents’ traffic, which doesn’t help to clear the ice either.

Mine is the same, perhaps more a half circle, I am fortunate that the back of my house faces south so I get all the sun, the disadvantage is it faces north and so the ice lingers and lingers and lingers!

It's crazy isn't it? We are watching the cricket on the telly (South Africa vs Aust) with jumpers on

She doesn't have the thick under layer that many Labs do, and my house isn't very warm and the kitchen where she sleeps is chilly overnight. She's looked and felt cold when I've come down in the mornings this week

Perhaps that would solve the problem of Cassie being cold overnight. I'm considering one of the duvets for Toffee.

Thank you @SteffiS , they do look good. I have one of their duvets on my bed and I love it!

I am reviewing her bed situation overall! My daughter has those Omlet beds for her dogs.

The problem in the cold weather is that Cassies bed is directly under a big, low window, I think she gets cold off that , so a coat I think would keep her warm from above! For 2 nights I gave her the run of downstairs so she could choose , but she rather abused the privilege by squeaking at the bottom of the stairs rather too early for my liking!

You stay inside, and only venture out if you have to. My van didn’t start this morning so my hubby drove me to work. It’s only about three blocks to walk but no way, thanks. I will likely not take pooch for a walk today- only if it warms up to above -30.
It’s just brutally, bitterly cold and you don’t venture out without good quality winter outerwear. And if you are driving anywhere you take sleeping bags to use as blankets and candles to warm up the car interior in case you get stuck somewhere. And your snow pants, scarves, hats, etc.
Simba’s paws do get cold but it’s amazing how he copes. He does get used to it. At the beginning of winter he’ll be lifting up a paw at around -10, now that doesn’t happen until below -20. But we don’t go out for long (or at all!) when it’s extremely cold like this. No fun for me or him.
