Utterly miserable @Emily_Babbelhund , you poor stick - you must feel bereft. I simply cannot see the logic, but perhaps there is none and maybe that leaves a smidge of hope for appeals? But jeesh, I want us to just blooming bundle you up and welcome you in to whichever country suits you best. Give yourself some space to regroup and do plan some lovely things for yourself in the interim. Carbón sounds like he’s being a dreamboat Spanish Gentleman as ever, bless him.

What does it mean for you in practice during the next year? Presumably you can still travel....but not stay anywhere long-term?
It means that I can still travel, but not work anywhere but Germany (or the US), not be out of Germany for longer than 6 months and at the end of the year go through the whole battle once again. I was also on track for German citizenship at the end of next year and now my lawyer has said it will likely be another three years - if I can renew the temporary permit for that long. Best case scenario as I understand it is that I've essentially just lost 2-3 years of effort.

That sounds unbelievably complicated and unnecessary after all you've done so far. It sounds as if your lawyer is on the case, but it doesn't make it any less unsettling. Here's hoping...

That totally sucks Emily. To not let someone in who is doing all the right things and is obviously genuinely going to be an ideal citizen does not make any sense. Different if you had just arrived without papers or any history. I'd say come and live here instead but it's just as hard to get residency I'm afraid.....but if it were up to me you could live here in a heartbeat

Come to Andorra :)

None of those silly EU rules. Just set yourself up a business here and you're dandy. OK, you'll never be a citizen, but you can work at least.

Actually.... you know, it might be worth investigating. Because our Andorran company allows us to work in Spain....

I'd say come and live here instead
And we don't have creatures that are trying to kill you around every corner ;)

Rory says he will get em
I don't know about Rory, but I suggest we send @SwampDonkey over to sort them out. No one would ever mess with her :shake:
I just don't know what to say to you. You almost couldn't make it up, and I feel so bad for you that you've played the game, paid the taxes, learnt the language, done the tests and spent the time. I just hope there's a way forward for you that presents a solution. It's not going to be great for you thinking about what uncertainty lies ahead for months and months. :(

Oh Emily, what the what? Is it because of your medical history? I'm thinking about the immigration cases that make the news in NZ and it's usually when a family member has medical issues so there's this whole "potential drain on the health system" concern. There've been families who've set up businesses, employed locals, and still been forced to leave (that wasn't for health reasons but because their business didn't grow sufficiently, even though it was a thriving cafe). But if you're a billionaire like Peter Thiel you get your citizenship without satisfying the pesky criteria. The lesson is - become a billionaire. Between your tax issues and your immigration issues I don't know how you manage to just get on with it some days.

You got it in one. Not eligible for permanent status because I was here for medical treatment. Even though I have insurance and paid everything in cash, so no drain on anyone.
That’s absolutely disgraceful. Basically punished for being poorly!

I’m so sorry, Emily! Sounds like you’ve got a good lawyer who is going to do everything he can. I will keep my fingers crossed for you x
