What other breeds do you like?

As much as I love the mastiff family, I'd never get a drooly dog. That also rules out Newfs even though I've never met a Newf I didn't love. I'd never get a high energy working breed unless it was a retirement situation.

I'd love a sassy little Chi but it must be so hard to find ones that have been bred for temperament. I'd also be terrified of walking it and having a big dog attack it and then ending up with your stereotypical neurotic Chihuahua.

Chi crosses from rescue are great. Usually mixed with some form of terrier and tough as nails, even the tiny ones. Only anecdotal evidence of course, but most of the neurotic ones are neurotic because of how their humans treat them. Take them away from the human that treats them like a handbag and most have the potential to become proper dogs with really sassy personalities. I had a couple fosters who started as snarling yappy messes and ended up fab little hikers. My beloved Emma was the most notable convert from snappy handbag dog to off road chi:

Also while horrible things can always happen to any size dog, big dogs don't often mess with Chis in my experience. They may be small, but they have a big dog attitude.

That's very interesting to hear, thank you! My dog experience is so limited so in my mind these tiny little Chis are just automatically targeted by big dogs. Glad to hear that it's not necessarily the case.

Fabulous! We need more Chis on the forum. SilverFalcon has a sassy little Chi but she hasn't been on the forum in yonks. I've sent her a quick PM, hopefully she's ok and comes back soon.

A friend of a friend has a Daschi and a great Dane. Truly an odd couple.

I really don't know what other dog I would have if not a lab. It would have to be practical and short haired though. Mud. Nuff said.

I love bigger dogs, but some have their downsides-
Italian Spinones, but they get so wet having a drink and leave puddles everywhere
Vizla, a bit too hyper for me (or maybe it’s just the one I know really well!)
German Shepard, unfortunately I’m allergic to their hair
Rottweiler, the only concern I would have is the reputation they have. My auntie had 2 and they were amazing
Great Dane, the ones I know are gorgeous, but too big for me

I’m not keen on collies (bad experiences), or greyhounds/whippets.

I do like some smaller dogs, but think I would get another lab 😍
