Some GD owners prefer German Shepherds because the public tend to leave them alone. People wanting to fuss labs and GRs can be the bane of their lives. It’s fine for me as I can see them homing in and pre-empt it, but GD owners often don’t know it’s happening until it’s happening. Of course, distracting a Guide dog puts the owner in danger. But there is no end to how much Stupid is out there!

Yes, I can see the other side of it too. It's different for me in that I'm actually pleased when people want to pet my dog and there's no danger to me if that happens. It simply means that it takes me longer to get from Point A to Point B, which I was quite used to with Brogan. With a guide dog (vs. an assistance dog) it's another story as distraction could be very dangerous.

My son is at University and there's a blind student in one of his lectures. She has a guide dog and is more than happy for anyone to pet her guide dog. Is it a personal preference @Boogie ? xx
Petting is fine, with permission, when the dog is off duty.

But when you are heading for the stairs or the road, or any other tricky place and some idiot clicks at your dog it’s downright dangerous.
.

She doesn't mind during lectures etc. of course with permission. I guess he's on duty then though. Totally stupid when heading through difficult stairs, roads etc. I just don't know what goes through some peoples heads at times. x

No, he’s ‘off duty’ in lectures. They have their harness off and they can relax until it’s time to go somewhere.

@Natalie I'm glad you got some snaps of our walk - I was too chicken to try to pull out my camera while negotiating the trail!

Love the nose kissy ones on Monty's bed. :inlove:

Many thanks to Natalie, her OH and Monty for being such good hosts - especially Monty who had to put up with a fair bit of dog appropriation from Carbon. I've said it before, but Carbon's motto seems to be: "If it belongs to a dog, it belongs to me!"

So Carbon was indeed a bit of a hooligan today. I made a mistake by not putting on his raincoat for our walk and I could tell his attitude ventured into Señor Grumpypantalones territory the more wet he got. I honestly thought it would be better for him simply to get wet as having his coat one would mean less physical freedom to dash around with Monty. Won't make that mistake again!

The boys did do a bit of dashing around despite the rain, mud and cliffs (dashing in safe areas only!). They also played together on the beach with Natalie's OH and then we all went into a lovely old church right on the beach. Carbon's first church sightseeing experience!

Then it was back to Monty's beach house to dry off in their matching coats and enjoy the gorgeous view from indoors. That's when Carbon really turned into the bad news guest: he demanded Kong after Kong from Natalie, lounged on Monty's bed, lounged on Monty's sofa and the piece de resistance...stole a cheese roll!

On the bright side, he truly adores Monty and they had such a good time together, regardless of Carbon's lack of manners. Today MONTY was definitely the Gentleman Dog.

When we got home this evening, my kind landlady came over to ask me a question. I shooed Carbon off the sofa before letting her in the door. Carbon is quite good about asking to go onto the sofa and has always kept to the floor when she is in the house. Tonight after we had a chat and I was walking her to the door, she glanced over and there was Carbon snoring away, sprawled out over his pillow, right in the centre of the sofa.

To her credit, kind lady and dog lover that she is, she just looked right away from Carbon and kept right on going out the door, thanked me for my help and cheerfully said she'd see me tomorrow.

Whew. Well I guess we're all going to continue to pretend that Carbon never gets on the furniture. Works for me!

Here are some photos of today to add to Natalie's:

Oh it looks fabulous @Natalie , super photos and what a lovely meet up with the glorious @Emily_Babbelhund and Carbón. The hounds look a similar size? it’s great to see them together in their matching coats :inlove: I hope the hoomans dried off eventually too, it was a bit damp today
Carbon is definitely more petite than Monty, shorter and a slighter frame. The heavens opened while we were out, and the sun came out half an hour after arriving home, typical! Hence few outdoor photos. It wasn't especially cold or windy, at least, but very, very wet from above.
