A nail a day?

I like watching dogs monch blueberries. It takes Chewie a bizarrely long time to eat one.
Snowie can eat a big raw chicken foot in about three or four crunches and then swallow. But a tiny raw almond: crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch (still crunching) ... (autocorrect does not like cronch!)

What a great idea! Love the diagram and key. Benson can't bear his nails being trimmed, he has odd growing nails and problems with his paws. His nails grow at a rate of knots though! Bramble and Casper just have the very tips taken off every few months or so. They both have lovely shaped paws especially Casper! Otter has cute little puppy paws with nice conformation. A good age to work on husbandry with her.
With Benson I have to be very, very careful as I totally buggered his response to nail cutting early on. Was wondering about employing a lick mat at the same time as I just lightly touch his paws.

You can do this, and it's something that Deb Jones uses for some husbandry stuff, but I would personally be very careful with that sort of approach because it was distracting Willow in the early days that landed us in the mess we ended up with; when she finally realised what was going on, she totally freaked out.
I'd go with the systematic DS/CC approach and take it SLOWLY. I'd also start off with using something very different to the clippers. I started with an emery board with the twins when I started to work on it.
I also like the approach of having the dog start the interaction. I put my hand, palm-down, on the edge of the sofa and I only start doing anything when Willow puts her foot on it.

I'm a bit more laissez-faire with the others, I'll freely admit, as I spend so much time on Willow with this and they are all OK. It's not ideal, and I'd prefer to teach them all with a very strong consent framework, but I simply don't have the time.

If you imagine your dog standing and facing you, I've just done the front claws left to right, and back claws left to right. But you don't have to go by that, or anything at all, so no pressure. It's honestly just because otherwise I wouldn't be able to keep track of which nails I'd done.

I haven't done one today and we're away tomorrow...next attempt will be Monday. I did try an emery board last week - she was fine with me playing with it, touching her feet on top, but as soon as it touched a nail - not even filing - she withdrew so I abandoned it.

My attempt this morning was a damp squib as Kipper was feeling playful and only wanted to give paw, which was lovely but frustrating for him when I tried to slow it down. We’ll try again tomorrow...

I find stuff like teeth brushing and nail trimming easier at night when Carbon is tired out and already taken himself to bed. In the morning he's too bouncy!
