Yes - sometimes! The more normal reaction is ignore me completely and just tag along. 😂

    Poppy Update 08/09/22

I think so too. She really rates Poppy and I don't think she'd go to all the trouble if that wasn't the case. On an up beat, I recalled Poppy this morning. She sat and looked at me. I clicked and treated and walked on. Where's the dog? Looked back and she's still sitting about 100yds behind...

    Poppy Update 08/09/22

There have been quite a few developments in the training stakes. It's difficult to know where to post to be honest, because I'm striving to produce a really polite well behaved dog on the one hand and potentially a satisfactory gundog on the other. It all got rather depressing when Poppy...

Hi Phil, So sorry to hear it's all getting difficult. As others have said, when Lady suddenly reached a stage I used to just take her to some local woods that she liked and let her just bumble about as much or as little as she liked. Just one thing I had to watch out for - she was stone deaf...

    Logs

I have an area of hard standing that I stack the logs on and then cover with tarpaulins. It supplements a number of bins. Not ideal but it accommodates a lot of logs.

    Logs

I think we have enough to get us through to end of March. We have a small Morso stove but it is really very efficient and puts out loads of heat. As long as it's not really cold outside for days on end the stove will actually heat the whole house if we keep the unused bedrooms and bathroom...

    Logs

We've just taken delivery of our winter log supply. We've taken 50% more than usual and we're going to try and avoid turning on the central heating as much as possible in view of the price of gas. With what we already have from last year we should have enough to keep the clean burn stove going...

    Poppy Update - 17/8/22

@Peartree yes I think there is more than an ounce of truth in that. Having discovered she will detect gun oil I've tried her a couple of times in the garden and again on our afternoon walk. She just does it! I call find and indicate a general area and she searches. Every one a winner. I think...

    Living with Poppy - Pony!

Just looked at the site. Really interesting but it seems to be for training people to be trainers but they have someone in Heathfield which is not far from where Poppy and I go for gundog training. I'll ping them an enquiry.

    Living with Poppy - Pony!

Please don't rub it in! It's something to look at isn't it. Teach her some new scents to work with because, let's face it, gun oil isn't going to be ideal. It's most interesting though. I think I got a hint of what she has been trained to do. When I opened the cupboard she went...

    Living with Poppy - Pony!

Yes that was funny. One engineer arrived to check the broken telephone line while his mate was in the street pillar. I asked if he was OK with dogs and to watch his bag as she was a failed sniffer dog and might explore it. He said he was well used to sniffer dogs as he used to be in security...

    Living with Poppy - Pony!

Update ..... I put the oily rag I use for gun cleaning in an outside storage cupboard where I keep the lawnmower, shredder and hedge trimmer. The rag is saturated in gun oil. Took Pops out into the general area of the cupboard and gave her the "find" command and she's off. A bit uncertain at...

    Living with Poppy - Pony!

Well just by way of an experiment you understand, I put Poppy's harness and leather lead on - all very similar to her previous life. When I showed her the harness she just came and stood while I put it on. Then much excitement that could have been just ooh! another walk. Took her in the garden...

    Living with Poppy - Pony!

Poppy failed her final test. If she'd passed she would have been a fully trained detection dog. She failed on loss of concentration. She had to be reminded what she was doing too often and was more interested in playing with her tennis ball, but she could do the job. You pose an interesting...

    Poppy Update - 17/8/22

Hi Anne, A friend in the police dog unit found her for me. He might be able to help with that but they were very cagey about letting us know what commands she responded to. It's possible it's because she's not just drugs, but also explosives and firearms. I haven't pursued it because I got the...

    Poppy Update - 17/8/22

I need to have a proper plan for each of the training sessions and address just one aspect at a time.

    Poppy Update - 17/8/22

We were off to a new location in the pouring rain (woohoo!) yesterday. The idea was to try again to introduce Poppy to a small group and see how she got on with other dogs to watch and interact with. The location was a lovely house and grounds in the depths of Sussex. One of those places...
