    Holly

We’ve been playing gentle games of seek in the garden to keep her amused. Chatting with the vet he seemed happy for her to take short car journeys as she’s a good traveller. Tomorrow we’re going to try a 15 minute very easy walk in the woods to give her a change.

    Holly

Holly's friends will know her as a gentle soul with a love of all-day country walks and muddy wallows, founding member of the SW pack, and as the author of two dog-walking books. It looks like her walking career is over. During the hot weather she was panting on her early morning walks. We...

    I'm back!

It's been a crazy academic year. All my students are now busy preparing for exams and panicking to get assignments submitted so the email deluge has reduced to a trickle. My 'problem student' has formally withdrawn from the course. The Covid rules have stopped changing and been withdrawn so I...

    Hello!

Welcome from Holly and me. Holly's a (mainly) sensible 9-year old and my third Lab. My wife and I found a puppy quite stressful after our previous sensible old girl, Cocoa. How are you getting on with Neo?

    Holly is 9

My lovely gentle mudloving swimaholic is 9 today. This morning we‘re going for a long romp in the woods. She can get as dirty as she likes today as we’ll come back via a pond. I’ll be sneaking a couple of biscuits into my bag for a doggy picnic, and nice treats for a big game of seek!

    Weather

The current heatwave has confused Holly. We’re getting up really early to walk her before it gets hot. The early start means that elevenses (with dog treat) is about 8:45, after which there is a long wait until lunchtime. By 10:00 she’s convinced that it should be lunchtime and starts to...

    UK ticks - spring’s here!

Tick treatment is essential. I’ve already removed one tick this year after walking through long grass. From what I read ticks are going to be an issue this year.

    UK ticks - spring’s here!

We've been using Avantix on Holly for years but the vet will no longer supply it as its 'not environmentally friendly'. They're offering Nexgard but its almost twice the price. It's also a pill, which means putting some form of chemical into Holly rather than applying it to her coat. Has...

    What made you smile today?

Holly got very confused about slippers this morning. She came home from a walk with Ruth and was sent to fetch her slippers. At the same time I was getting ready to go out so I'd just taken my slippers off. The result was that Holly kept trying to give my slippers to Ruth. We could see Holly...

    Do you greet your dog?

Greet, every time. I can't imagine coming home and not saying hello to Holly. The full-on waggy welcome s one of the joys of dog ownership. We say hello at the door then she will dash off to fetch a toy. We have a play then she'll go to fetch my slippers (with treats as a reward).

    A confusing week

Holly’s next trauma will be when the builder starts work on the porch on Monday 21st. There will probably be a bit of barking with people at the front door. After that we have the fun of painting the hall, landing and stairs. We’re anticipating little tail-shaped white marks when we do the...

    A confusing week

It’s worth the disruption. The house looks much nicer, and the new carpets are softer and deeper for Holly to lie on.

    A confusing week

Holly’s had a very confusing week. Today we had new carpets fitted for the lounge, dining room, stairs and landing. We spent this week moving furniture around, which upset Holly a bit. She dislikes change and is a real creature of habit. Yesterday I took up all the carpet, so we had bare...

    What made you smile today?

We had pizza tonight with a lovely crisp cheesy crust. We let Holly have a few bits of crust. Now she’s lying in the kitchen with her nose hoovering up every last atom of pizza smell.

    What made you smile today?

My new slippers arrived this morning. Holly and I did a training session with the new slippers and a generous pile of treats. She now knows what they look like and has fetched them from all the usual hiding places.
