    Behaviourists/trainers

I don't think you can really go wrong with either of those organisations. They're the most common. I did my qualifications with the ISCP, but both the ones you mentioned I would consider to be more thorough. As with anything, though, it's more to do with experience than the qualification...

    Crufts

W&S would spontaneously combust from stress. Squidge would think it was the best thing ever. I’m sure there are many dogs who are overwhelmed with it and who shouldn’t be there. I'm pretty sure I'd find it dull as dishwater, let alone what my dogs would think of it! My brief foray into...

    Crufts

LOL I'm sure they would. But they're also not at Crufts every day, so that's a tiny bit reductive. It's not Crufts OR walks in the countryside, is it?

    Crufts

I think it's just something that you need to train. Make sure the dog is used to the down time, and the hectic stuff going on around them. In the few short weeks that I've been taking Shadow to agility training, it's great to see how relaxed he's become. There can be a lot of waiting there, and...

    Ginny

Ah she’s doing ok thanks for asking. Not much in the way of walks these days, although she came for a little potter around this afternoon. She tires quickly and that makes her fall more frequently. She has very little muscle mass, and it can be a challenge to keep weight on her - the complete...

    Sleeping arrangements

Right now I am sleeping in the downstairs bedroom specifically so that Ginny can sleep on the bed with me. As she’s not able to come on walks anymore, I feel it’s important to sleep together for her social well-being. Right now this minute I’m laying in the double bed on my right side. Squidge...

Slowing down, and gaining weight fast

The very last thing I would be doing with an overweight and limping dog is agility type obstacles. Dogs should be lean and strong before doing these otherwise the impact and strain is horrific. As the others have said, cut his food by a third, from the sounds of it that will still likely be...

    What made you smile today?

Getting to photograph my friend's 8-week-old boxer yesterday made me smile. She's so cute! She doesn't have a name yet, but that doesn't seem to bother her :D

    Beautiful Bella

Bella has been acting a bit weird for a couple of weeks. At first I thought she may have an upset tummy (she's been a bit windy from eating too many olive stones) and then I thought she may have tweaked something. She perked up with a bit of meloxicam for a couple of days, but when I stopped...

    Back to agility

Our third session and he’s doing so well! Weaves are our weakest skill, which isn’t surprising because they’re really complex, and there’s a lot of work to do throughout, but we’re both loving it, and everyone thinks Shadow is a brilliant boy. Which he is, obvs.

    What made you smile today?

This is Jane who used to work on the Ski School in Soldeu and who trained me up to be qualified to teach adaptive skiing. She’s now Chef de Mission for the NZ Paralympic team and she deserves every accolade she and her team get. I couldn’t be prouder of her!

    Back to agility

I've started back up at agility with Shadow and yesterday was our first session. Because he's "experienced" (fnarr fnarr) we just pay club membership and go along twice a week and use the facilities. The instructors are there to help out if and when we need it. We've not been in several years...

    Feeling blue

A large number of trainers and behaviourists end up in the professions because they have had to deal with their own problem dogs at one time or another. And it can be a bit addictive, when you have one "special" one, you often end up collecting more. Not looking around anywhere in particular...

    Feeling blue

Meh, you screwed up a little. We all do it. Last time I did this, I ended up in the hospital with a nasty fracture and the end of my finger half hanging off, and a fractured bone.Over a year later and I still don't have full feeling back. So don't be too hard on yourself, we can't all be on...
