Still trouble with jumping...and question about crating

Aspen is 16 months and we are still struggling with jumping on people. The only place he doesn't do it is at the vet and I am guessing it is because he is a little anxious and unsure. I have tried scattering, keeping on a leash until no more jumping, and ignoring or turning away. I even ask...

    Not stinky...not...pleasant?

I grew up around labs and would notice some houses have that "lab" smell. I know many of you say your dogs don't have smells but it isn't really a bad smell, just something you notice because it smells...different? I have been noticing Aspen kind of has a smell, similar to his paws. I am...

    Snuggling then VS now...

@Lab_adore, no worries, I felt the same exact way! You are exactly right, it comes with age, but like Snowbunny mentioned, some dogs just don't have it. Aspen didn't start snuggling until he was almost a year old. We still think its amazing each time he decides to snuggle with one of us, so I...

    Snuggling then VS now...

@Jelinga, Aspen could not stay still. When we brought him for his first vet appt. with our new doc as a puppy he told us that we had to work on training him to enjoy being held...we didn't, because his tactics for teaching that seemed questionable, but Aspen turned out just fine, luckily :ROFLMAO:

    Snuggling then VS now...

Remember when your dog was a puppy and wanted nothing to do with being handled? Maybe not...but I do. Aspen was a demon when it came to being held. He would bite, grumble, and fight you. He didn't like being pet at all. Well yesterday I got a memory notification from photos I took a year ago and...

    Toby

So, the kennels that we have brought Aspen to for some overnight stays as well as his obedience school has been posting about a dog named Toby who needs a new home. He is a 7 year old Newfie/Lab/Collie mix and needs a new family because his owner has been put into a home for the elderly so he...

Aspen's paw - Warning: photo of unpleasant cut

Aspen's wound is finally scabbing over. After battling over wearing a mitten for about a week, we've finally gotten to slow down on it always being wrapped because it's scabbing over. It of course didn't slow him down at all but he sure tested my limits of being able to handle blood. He was very...

    Warty chops

Aspen is just getting over a bout of these. They're nasty little things! He didn't have them in a ball like that, but rather as single warts near each other. My vet said not to worry as long as they are not interfering with daily life/comfort. They are going away after a few weeks. I hope...

Cut toes!!! But still a happy pup

Thank you everyone! I hope he heals quickly too. The real hard part is getting him to not jump all over and be his normally crazy self so his paw can heal!

Cut toes!!! But still a happy pup

Today Mr. Aspen got a little too excited when he saw a dog walking by the house and pushed the plexi-glass in our single pane window when he jumped up to the sill to look outside. His paw got trapped between the glass and the trim, and he tried to get his paw out. In doing so, he cut his toes...

Why did you chose a Labrador ?

My boyfriend's family always had labs. He had a beloved Black Lab named Rocky. When my boyfriend, Justen, was younger, he got into a very bad car accident with his sister and had to be in the hospital for multiple injuries. While he was away, Rocky had a grand mal seizure and had to be put down...

Scared of clippers and now toothbrush?!

@Charlie just Walmart brand clippers. I am thinking we should invest in new clippers. I am just going to try going back to square one and seeing how that goes. Thank you, it means a lot! I am just worried a bit about the tooth brushing as Aspen has some not so great teeth and it is really...

Scared of clippers and now toothbrush?!

I couldn't access this forum yesterday, something about the host wasn't online, so I couldn't post. BUT Aspen - seemingly overnight - has developed a fear of not only his nail clippers but also his toothbrush! This July he will be 15 months old. Clipping his nails was one of the (few, IMO)...

    A Myth

    Too thin? Just right?

@Oberon Yes, typically we only see it when he is sniffing the ground or laying down and chewing on a toy between his paws. Should he just be eating a kibble high in protein? His Fromm food is 23% crude protein. I am going to be honest, not sure if that is ideal or not...the spine worries me. I...

    A Myth

Say you have a male labrador who runs away when outside. He isn't very reliable when it comes to staying by your side. Does neutering reduce this impulsive running away? I know that it's training and working up to a reliable recall. I have read all the articles on the Labrador Site. But others...
