Preparing a dog for train/public transportation travel

Well, when we first took Harv on a train it was a spur of the moment thing with no advance preparation  (he was as a good as gold but no thanks to us!). He has also done coaches, river ferries and passenger boats. The only thing that gave us/Harv any cause for concern was the very loud...

    Cold Coats.

I'm no expert but I suspect that the iced water part actually made things worse because of the reaction that the body then makes - bloody hell its cold I'd better warm us up! The coat we have we use cold water, not iced, and wring it out before putting it on Harv. I haven't stuck a thermometer...

    Cold Coats.

Hi, I'd always been very cynical about the idea of such things until ... We recently went to the Hanbury Show and were speaking with the gundog trainer that we have been using (she and some friends were putting on a display at the show). All of their dogs had these cold coats on before...

    Bramble's Gundog Log

Thanks for the update - that sounds great. I've come across the PARTY concept before (is it an Absolute Dogs thing?) and thought how good it was - but then forget to sort out some high value treats to use for the training!

    Frisbee anyone?

We don't play with a frisbee but we do sometimes play with a puller ring (or two). Harv likes chasing these but they are also great for some Tug / Leave it play while out on an off-lead walk. If you aren't familiar with them, Nando Brown talks about them here :

Observation Skills - What do you see in this dog's body language? Episode 1

Interesting stuff ... I'll be watching these threads with interest as I know very little about this topic. A pet peeve of the gundog trainer that we take Harv to at the moment is handlers with whistles on lanyards who bend over their dogs and poke them in the eye with the whistle! I have to...

    Resource guarding

I would have done the same thing and then ... I would have given the bone back to her! That may seem strange but my thinking is that this shows her that you are not competing for the bone - if she knows that there is no competition then she has no need to guard the bone. Rinse and repeat...
