The neighbors got a puppy. Not sure how Shamas feels....

we're starting to have trouble now: The puppy is barky at his current age of 14 weeks. One of the kids let Shamas out while the puppy was out, and Shamas had an episode of yelling, growling etc at the fence so now the neighbors are unhappy with us. Every time he hears the puppy next door he...

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

That's something I never thought about. He knows a couple of my concerns with the other vet, but I don't like to disparage one business owner to another. I somehow doubt a man like Dr Fith would ever recommend such a low-budget shop as the one near me anyway....we only ever used them because...

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

Matt is home safe and sound. And here are the reasons I trust Firth unequivocally: Matt's had Two rounds of bloodwork leading up to his dental. When the second round identified high liver enzymes, and low white cell count, Dr Firth and his team completely overhauled his medication schedule...

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

It's Ok..I'm awfully picky myself, relying on gut sense and how my animals feel about a vet to decide if they make the cut or not. And like it or not, money IS a factor. My husband and I work 6 days a week to support our family and pets, and can't afford unnecessary procedures. SO if a vet...

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

TI's been decided that the risk of Matt having eaten doesn't complicate things overly..so he's in. Firth will keep a close eye on him, because he knows I already lost one cat on the table during a routine dental...and Matt is not routine, with his blood levels off. But he IS in pain and I have...

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

Dr Firth now employs "medical advocates" and usually have good communication with them. I got a call going over everything last night. Matt's liver enzymes are high, and his white blood is low...so they want to change the aenesthetic they use for a safer one. And they had me NOT use the loading...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

So the new harness/saddlebags lasted a week. AB put too much in the saddlebag and it tore right off. I went looking for a new one but couldn't find his size. I DID find this though: It's great on him, and seems to wrap around in a way that makes him less anxious. I added two patches, that just...

On the hunt for a vet during COVID

So we're on the hunt for a new vet(or more the point, a back-up vet) due to COVID As it stands, we are registered with two...Firth, whom we love, but they are running only 8-4, Mon-Thur on a curbside basis. I'm unhappy with this situation, because it means I can't actually TALK to my vet...

The neighbors got a puppy. Not sure how Shamas feels....

Thanks for that tip. I doubt we'll get much co-operation out of the other owner, as he seemed to think we should just let Tiko and Shamas sort it out when they started fence running. The result is two dogs who can't go into their yards without challenging the other. I'll be working strictly...

The neighbors got a puppy. Not sure how Shamas feels....

He's not fence-running, that's a good sign. The fact that the puppy isn't old enough to know that territorial behavior is an option helps here. But he IS stopping to sniff the air, and giving a WoROROROO! (It's his "there's someone at the door" bark)stiff-legged before running off to mark a...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

So we seem to be bouncing back pretty quickly this year. That's good. I DID get him a new harness and saddlebags, complete with a front clip high up on the chest, and both girth and belly straps to hold it in place. Good design, it seems like it was made for him. The placement of the front clip...

    What made you smile today?

Shamas was almost going to refuse to walk today but his new squeaker saved the say. I gave it a good squeeze and jogged, and he got excited to run with me. When a dog stepped out of his house suddenly, we turned around and Shamas didn't lose his cool :)

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

We know that he was picked up off the side of the highway. The trainer suspects puppy mill backgrounds. We are certain that he's country bred and raised. He's afraid of...and very specifically...overweight women in their 40-50s with shrill voices, and extremely reactive to small dogs in the...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

There are things I can do inside, but the problem is...if I can't get him out, he harasses the cats. Or rushes the window to bark at every person that walks by the house.Or throws his big heavy ball at people trying to do homework. Or knocks you around the knees to get your attention because...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

We've had him for three years. We got him Oct 27, 2017. He was 5 then and he was a basket case outside of the house, but the sweetest thing inside. We theorise that he's country-bred and never socialized properly. A trainer that we had has made comments about the possibility of him having been a...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

So I got him out, but I had to use a front leading harness and collar both for safety, in case he bolted. At one point he tried to get away from me and I had to wait for him to calm down. there were people coming up on both sides from behind him. He's calmer now, after a walk. I was in the...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

Well, it's begun 5 degrees, and damp today. Shamas refused to leave the driveway. Nope, not having it. Want to go home. Outside is SCARY! Now he's inside, barking at everything that walks by, because he's not had exercise :/ I can hear a train...and the nearest train tracks are a good 30...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

Yes. other than when the geese honked, he was very good. He still does his protests, trying to stay on his beaten path, but we've been able to walk different ways with him a lot more. William street was completely off the table until recently, so we took a long way around, using William as part...

Emotional regression perhaps less this year?

Shamas seems to be regressing less this year. He's definitely more jumpy with the onset of fall weather, and we had a lingering incident yesterday. But on the same page, last night he walked to the main road, and past a dog that was laying down next to the sidewalk. Granted, my youngest(fear...

Guard dog on duty- Good boy, Shamas!

Exactly We wanted a dog when hubby went on nights..not a rip-your-arm-off-when-you-come-in-the-window dog, but a bark-his-head-off-to-scare-you dog Shamas falls quite neatly into the second category. We honestly think there's a 50/50 chance if the man had still been in the yard by the time...
