If you use the malaseb shampoo make sure to dry the area thoroughly afterwards. I would really try to cut away the hair in and around the wound. It will heal up much quicker if air can get to it.

In this sort of situation I give my dogs the 'Gone Away' cue. It is pretty much the same as 'Leave'. And then follow with the reward which is to hunt on but away from the direction the flushed animal has disappeared to.

I would start little retrieving games as soon as the pup comes home using soft toys, rolled up socks and my favourite, paint rollers. They are soft and light and cheap and puppies love carrying them. I would do all the things Fiona describes except the tugging on the toy. ;):)

No, they don't always do what I ask them to do but I am surrounded by shoots here and there are pheasants everywhere so certain things have to be trained or taking them just out into my field would be a nightmare every single day.
