A bit weird!

Some of you may know from my "Vets again!" thread that a couple of weeks ago I took Scott to the vet with what I thought was anal gland issues. The vet emptied his anal glands but decided they were fine it was a skin irritation that was causing him to lick excessively so gave me cream to apply which did the trick.(y) Ever since Scott had his anal glands emptied though Scout has taken a rather keen interest in Scott's back end after he has "performed" as my auntie likes to call it. Seriously that's what she calls it. I can't help asking if it was the nut cracker suite or Beethoven's 5th when she says it. Anyway Scout's nose basically gets super glued to Scott's back end and sometimes Scout gets so worked up he starts to behave like Scott's a bitch in season even trying to hump him (not a word my auntie would use;)) I have a "Jennifer theory":geek: that maybe because the anal glands have been emptied they are now flowing more freely, producing more stuff and so more, for some unknown reason, enticing to Scout. I don't know but it's not very convenient whilst trying to walk so I hope it stops soon. Anybody any ideas ?

I thought that infected anal glands could be appealing to dogs. That doesn't fit with that story though.
Hmmm.
Exactly Jac. If this had happened before Scott had had them emptied that's what I'd be thinking. I can't face that flippin vets again.:cautious:

@Aitch might have something. Last night after Scott "performed" ;) Scout started getting worked up. Whinging, bouncing and then trying to hump !!! I bathed Scott's back end with some cooled boiled water and Scout calmed down !!! He had a sniff every now and then for a bit but didn't get excited. Also no horrible fishy smell. I'm guessing from what I've read if it was dodgey anal glands it would stink.

Sorry if I repeat myself but I'm at a loss at why or what to do. Scout is still going crazy over Scott's back end after Scott has poo'd !!! Some of you may have read on Vets again thread that I contacted the vet about this problem. She thought there may be a slight infection even though nothing showed up when Scott had his anal glands emptied and put him on antibiotics. Just two doses and all was back to normal until two doses before Scott finished the antibiotics when all of a sudden Scout starts getting what can only be described as randy when Scott poos again !!! Would an infection flair up again whilst still taking antibiotics that had been working ?!?! The only other common denominator both times was feeding Scott salt to test his kidney concentration. When the vet rang with those results a couple of weeks ago I told her the bottom problem had started again and my theory about the salt. She didn't see why there should be a connection but didn't dismiss it and told me not to put salt in their water as an electrolyte for a week or so to see. I've been using Glandex wipes specifically for anal gland issues although can be used anywhere to remove smells if your dog has rolled in something aromatic they have a natural enzyme to get rid of odour. They have cured any irritation Scott had apart from the irritation that is his brother trying to hump him. It has improved slightly. In fact the last few days he's not bothered too much until this morning. It's murder trying to walk while Scout tries his best to get his nose up Scott's bum. Sorry this should've been in the Whine section but if anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful. Google has drawn a blank and the vets suggestion squirt Scott's bum with bitter Apple !!! That's gotta smart surely ?!?! :tmi:

I know this may sound random....but have you checked Scott's ears? I only say this Casper gets a very specific ear infection, can't remember off the top of my head which infection. Even before the infection is obvious, some dogs find him a bit fruity.

His right ear looks ok. Will check left ear when he moves. He's curled up by me on the couch at the moment. If his ears are ok I wonder if it could be something similar with Scott but on his bum. Thrush or maybe something similar was suggested last time which could still be a possibility. I was hoping the wipes might help and they have in that Scott isn't licking anymore. The problem with the wipes is they aren't very practical to take/use on a walk. I only have two hands so what with two dogs, one trying to jump the other, plus poo bags it's a bit difficult. I either wipe before walk or after and Scout usually calms down quite quick once inside anyway. :wasntme:

Oh no, Jen! I thought we were out of the woods with the interesting bum :( . It could be that there is an infection which hadn't cleared 100% hence Scout's new interest in Scott's bum. Or as @Beanwood says perhaps there is another low level infection - ears are a good bet, which is causing the interest. Sounds like another call/visit to the vet.

Sorry to read @Jennifer that you are still having this issue :(

I got hold of Garlic Juice for Cassie's ears for when they are smelly, but not infected and I have to say it has been very effective. Yesterday I wiped her over with it after she rolled over badger poo, it certainly took the smell away, might be worth a thought :)
Thank you Selina that's very interesting. Something I can put on that will linger would perhaps do the trick as Scout's interest in Scott's backside isn't constant only when he's poo'd.

This could be diet related, even if food hasn't been changed recently, if it's only after Scott's poo'd.
I wondered that Rosemary. I've just started a new bag of food from a new batch so it will be interesting to see. Also Scott hasn't had salt on his food for just over two weeks so I would've thought that should be out of his system but both times this has happened after feeding him salt and it was a lot of salt far more than anyone would put on chips. He had much more salt in a day than we would. The first time it was just over three weeks after stopping the salt that everything got back to normal. That did coincide with the antibiotics but a couple of days before the antibiotics I'd noticed an improvement. If by some miracle I'm right then we should be back to normal roughly the end of next week. I'm a bit obsessed with the idea of it being the added salt but it just seems like too much of a coincidence.
