Another dog?

I've been saying in a joking way for ages to my OH that I'd like a puppy for my birthday (last June) and now Christmas. (Don't worry we're definitely NOT getting a puppy for Christmas). Today he suddenly asked me if I really wanted another dog and that it would be OK but not till spring as we have a holiday booked in January. Well you could have blown me down with a feather! Now I need to think seriously about whether I really do want another dog - I've had dogs all my adult life but only one at a time (though as a child we had two dogs at once.) OH says if I really want a puppy he'll agree but he'd really rather we rehomed an adult rescue - possibly an adolescent when, in his words, 'someone has got a cute puppy and then the dog grows up and they can't cope.' OH even started to talk about squeezing in another sofa to our living room! I don't want to spoil Molly's life and I wonder how she'd feel about another dog. I'd like one to train for rally - having made all my mistakes with Molly I think I'd be better at it second time round.
I had a look at some rescue sites but won't register yet. Most of them sound very stern and forbidding but I suppose they are just trying to stop people from adopting on a whim. I've also followed the Black Retriever x Facebook page as they seem a bit friendlier.
Got to think too about the practicalities of fitting two Lab-types in our small car. I had been thinking about a Cocker Spaniel puppy so I suppose I could look at spaniel rescue too. I'm happy with a crossbreed but I don't want a terrier.

I like a bit of 'seed' planting where men are concerned! Lots to think about Joy. Have you thought about rescuing from overseas? I know someone who has had all her dogs for over 30 years from Spain, they have all been lovely. Rescue centres in the UK are strict which I agree with but often they just don't have the breed(s) you might be interested in.

Good luck!! xx

Oooh so exciting!!! I have always had two dogs together, and I love it. It's actually not much more work than having one - the main issue for me is if we want to go away without the dogs, then it is tricky finding someone to look after both of them. So mostly we just take them with us now...

When I feel the need to tease OH I always say I want a puppy for my birthday, or for Christmas. To be specific, a Jack Russell terrier.

He says I can have one with my next husband.

I don't really want a JRT... not really... Though I do love them, they are such tough, jolly little dogs...

Those fellas do surprise us. I spent years planting the seed, OH gave in, now he thinks we should have another one.
Thing is it is me that does it all, he really isn't any help, although he loves Maisy to bits.
So if you have a hubby that will share the load then I would go for it, don't let him think about it too long!

Do you want a 'next husband' though? Could you start looking at dating sites and get him worried?
Then he might cave :fingers:

I love, love having two dogs. I love watching them together.

But I can’t really afford another, the insurance and the kennelling (we go away a lot and my friend has Tatze but wouldn’t have two)

So I puppy walk - no cost and all the fun. My heart is broken once a year but apart from that it’s the best ‘job’ ever.
